Meh, even though I primarily spent the 7th gen playing games at 720p. I had no problem enjoying games on Wii or PS2 running at 480p with inferior graphics.

I appreciate high quality graphics, but its a novelty to the average consumer.

price isn't

No shit.

But even at the same price, the PS4 was going to have the edge on sales.

If the previous gens (6 & 7) are any indicator, hardware arguments are more common the closer the two competitors are in marketshare, although it will also diminish over time.

With the 6th gen, both the GC and the XB were pretty clear in their ability to produce better visuals. The GC was somewhat hobbled by Nintendo's decision to use mini optical discs with limited storage, but the games still looked better. But regardless of the technical gaps, the sales percentages were so far apart that none of that seemed to have had any effect on the PS2.

I'm not predicting that the PS4 will run away with the majority percentage, even though it is currently tracking as though it will, but if so, there won't be much point in arguing hardware advantages if the XB1 is selling half of what the PS4 is. People will still argue, with the contrarian arguments coming from the XB1 fanbase, but it really won't matter in that scenario.

The 7th gen was in many ways the most interesting hardware generation in that the expanded audience of non-traditional players determined market share percentages, and also in that the platform that was looking like a poor third in the beginning, legitimately managed to flip a 180 in recovery.

As you were saying, it's probably because sales between the PS3 and XB360 were so close that hardware continued to be such a point of debate and to be fair, the two platforms used very different architectures to achieve similar results in most cases. After a few years, memory distribution, processors, etc. really didn't matter so much as how those resources were used to produce end results did, although geeks continued to debate hardware rather than just differences in multiplatform titles.

I myself does not have any interest in resolution, after all I enjoyed the Wii despite it had some games that were uglier than N64.
But looking at new games on the big screens that are sold these days I have to admit that it is quite possible to see the problem with low resolution.

what concerns me more about resolution is aliasing.
i dont mind play low res games if they have a good AA.

Well, that means people are smart.

You see 2 products, one is better than the other but the 2 are at the same price, any decent customer would buy the best product.

X1 should be less expensive than PS4

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

There is no excuse for a 500$ system to run at the same resolutions as a 8 and 9 year old console. PS4 has been pretty much entirely at 1080p so I can not complain with it.

Resolution does not make a game good or bad (My fav game is BF4 on PS4 which is 900p) but with a new generation I expect the resolution to go up or there was really no point in the new generation

I agree that res probably make the most notable difference. But saying that CODG looks the same on X1 and 360 because they're in the same (or similar, not sure what the res on 360 is), is very false. I do agree that it's sad that the only major game on x1 that are 1080p are sports games and forza though.

...to any real gamer they are totally cringeworthy.

It is absolutely ridiculous that developers today have to justify what freakin resolution they run their games at. I guess all these so called "elite hardcore gamers" are oblivious to the fact that most "HD" games last generation rendered at sub 600p resolutions.

Most people wouldn't even recknogize the resolution a game renders at. Resolution only accounts for a small part of how well a game looks. What's worse, is that you hardly see any threads about what makes a game really great. It's never about game design or which emotions a game evokes.

The gaming world is filled with idiots.

How large your resolution is directly limits how much detail you can output.  Period.

Also resolution wars?  That would assume one side had any capacity to fight back...

Yes, a preference in video games is a sign of intelligence...

If the 3DS and Vita were the same price, the VIta would still get dominated in spite of the Vita being technically superior. A lot of people prefer Nintendo handheld consoles and better support sealed the deal.

Playstation is still a more popular brand than Xbox. For Xbox to win over fans they need to beat Sony at price, but they didn't attempt to do that this gen and its no surprise they're trailing behind.

Excellent question. Though I wouldn’t call it a war, exactly. That suggests both sides stand an equal chance of winning.”

Xbox doesn't have Pokemon or Monster Hunter. They can't beat Sony at games with just FPS's and the occasional driving game.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

Its pretty blown out of proportion for sure, its this generations ammo for people to sling at each other though. This early in a console life cycles neither is sitting on a big library of games. People that want to fight with each other its the easiest disparity between the 2 to use.

That being said, it does mean something that PS4 is $100 cheaper and outperforms the One. Is it a massive deal for the broad demographic? No as graphics alone traditionally haven't been what moves systems. That being said to the core gamer who enjoys graphics and is looking for a considerable bump up from last generation the PS4 being a more powerful console for cheaper certainly means something.

Honestly I never even noticed resolution too much until my eye became trained to 4k. Now when I go back and look at 1080p or less it sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm a huge minority though as very few people are currently gaming at 4k resolution.
