Probably because of Japan.

Yep, in fact Ballmer asked twice to nuke it again, but the first time Bush Jr almost choked on his pretzels, the second, Obama was more open to the idea, but after conferring with Michelle and Hillary, he came back disconsolate, opening his arms and told him: "Sorry, we can't".

I think Sony won't be number one next-gen and Microsoft will be 3rd place

It will come down to MS's stubbornness to bundle kinect.
The longer they keep it bundled, the slimmer its chances become.
I bet if there wasnt kinect and they were the same price, sales would be very close. Even the resolution thing wouldnt have mattered as much as it does because of the fact that you can play the better version of multiplatforms while paying less*.

*Excluding cases where retailers have charged ridiculous prices or forced people to buy 3 games in a bundle because of PS4 shortages.

Exactly their system is simply not as powerful as its competitor and it has suffered and will continue to suffer from lacking visuals in multiplatform games and it will moreso when comparing exclusives.  If they just got rid of that stupid kinect this console war could be so much closer!!

It could come back if microsoft switched their gears. The ps3 had free online which was a very big advantage. If both are the same price and the performance of both come to a par I could see this happenning, even though it is unlikely.

When you consider the fact that M$ only has a presence in 2/3s of the markets that Sony does, and the fact that one of those markets has been heavy Sony territory for 3 generations now, is it really surprising that the PS3 eventually overtook the 360?

The more interesting stat is that despite Sony dominating for 2 consecutive generations, they still lost North America to M$ by nearly a 2-1 margin this past gen.

So does this make the original Playstation a miracle? given it was Sony's first console ever, and Sega and Nintendo almost being at their prime?

It's not a secret that Sony made extremely bad decisions last generation in gaming and other product lines alike. Yet despite this, and their financial status declining, Microsoft couldn't even win worldwide. All things considered, there is nothing interesting in MS winning in their homeland.

Well the one impressive thing about the original PlayStation was that it was the first time in the post-crash gaming industry that a preexisting, non-videogame centric tech/electronics company found success in the home console market.  Both Panasonic and Phillips failed miserably just a couple years earlier by comparison.

But the one thing that helped Sony's success with the PlayStation the most was the missteps SEGA and Nintendo made leading up to that generation, much like the missteps Nintendo and M$ made leading up to this gen that has led to the success of the PS4.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Lucidium would be quite cross if Ballmer nuked Japan.

Poor Lucidium, let's just hope it be fast and painless!

Xbox like anything has it's dedicated fanbase but not to the extent Nintendo and Playstation have. I'm not sure if it ever will. A bit like Sega almost
