Game changer... you need to try first to see.

which is a problem in of itself.

given how dumb that thing looks i imagine a ton of people will refuse to even try it.

When word starts spreading of how good it is those people will eventually have to try it. It's as intuitive as motion controls but with a whole extra level of immersion.

If it's that great I hope it will, but it will be an hard fight. Really, for most people it's really a nerd 80's dream that failed so many times, so it's kind of laughable. You don't even see it anymore in SF movies. I remembered this thing and just felt nostalgic.

I'm very unsure also about the Wife Acceptance Factor. Just watching an anime with an headphone for an hour makes me asocial and wierd at home. I can't even think about a full VR set, kids, and TV getting crazy about the device "They play Doom on this asocial device. DOOM !!! We are all Doomed !".

Anyway I will not be one of the first buyers, so please make it mainstream ;)

Even if it's really good, doesn't change the fact you have to put this strange thing on your head.

and that's your biggest problem with VR? *sigh*

Even if these new VR devices that are being developped now don't really make the promise of VR come true (and I strongly think they will), we will get there eventually, and then, we can consider this just another necessary and unavoidable step in the evolotuin of this particular technology.

A very good and useful technology, not just for entarteinment.

And yes, it will require a strange thing to send images to your eyes independently somehow.

There will be people in the future that will look at monitors in virtual museums and consider them strange, removed, and very lacking...probably.

I just don't see how reducing the usabality of 3D technology makes any commercial sense whatsoever -- especially when prior 3D advancements still haven't caught on.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

Not really. As I get it, the vast majority still doesn't understand the hype, and it's the very moment when people try it out for the first time that they get enlightened.

Seriously, just about everyone I've talked to about the Oculus Rift who's actually tried it described the experience in a kind of 9/11 way, where time is being devided into "before" and "after"...

As Henry Ford said: If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.

That's a problem but it might also work somewhat in modern VR's favour. The technology has moved on so far since the 80s that it'll come as a pleasant shock to people when they first try the new consumer devices.

@ bolded

I'll try, lol.

VR will get destroyed by 4K -- which provides a the lifelike visual experience literally without the overhead.

VR is a more costly, unnecessary gimmick than the Kinect or Wii U Gamepad.

You seriously believe that? 4K is just a resolution upgrade. It will become standard in a few years with people not even talking about it. The Xbox fans are trying to convince us that even the difference between 720p and 1080p is neglectable, and they're actually somewhat correct.

It actually sounds to me like you have some serious aversion against VR that you're desperately trying to rationalize.

Say what you will, I am still looking forward to the day of full-integrated video games. This seems like a small step forward so I am all for it. Bring on a new reality, I need to escape from this one from time to time.

I don't expect to be mindblowing but I want to play TLOU and other fantastic games with those. Certainly a better experience than TV

I think in the case of Xbox, you have the Kinect which hasn't lived up to it's potential as the Kinect-only games tend to be laggy shovelware. Other than a particular Skyrim DLC, AAA developers have stayed away from it. Other than Kinect Sports Rivals, there's not a single Kinect-only game in the spotlight.

Ask consumers to take up another gimmick? Too far bro.

That explanation is way too simple. Kinect failed for completely different reasons, not "laggy shovelware".

If you seriously want to judge the potential success of a new gaming-related device, the million dollar question is:

What does it bring to the table? How - or where - will it really improve the gaming experience?

That's why, back when Kinect was just released, I correctly predicted that it's success would be pretty much limited to dance and sports/fitness games. Because THAT's where Kinect is truly brillant, where it can show it's strengths, where Kinect is clearly superior to just any other previous control scheme, because it's just a natural fit. But the vast majority of games is from different categories, and these games continued to be better with old-style controllers etc.

Kinect is the perfect control scheme for a certain niche of games, just like racing wheels for racing games.

VR HMDs on the other hand are a completely different story, they will boost the immersion/experience in pretty much every game that features a virtual 3D world. Just about every game will suddenly feel much more realistic.

I do really think OR needs to find a way to make it so it doesn't look like you've just strapped a small tv to your head.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Also, going from 720p to 1080p was already hard,  4K is impossible for current gen, and I don't even believe we'll get 4K for next generation. So, 4K is like in 10 years from now.
