The last time PS4 was in stock at amazon it was on for 2-3 days... and it outsold XboxOne by nearly 2:1... it not selling out on Amazon is nothing for the moment.. especially as it jumped straight to no 1.

Let's see what happens shall we, lots of things can change, TitanFall is a total unknown yet.

well sales on amazon wont really tell us how sales will be in march. if anyone who wants to buy a PS4 right now most likely has to buy it from the store its available at, which is Amazon right now. but Xb1 is readily available everywhere, so people dont have to go to a certain store (amazon) to get it. so while its impressive that PS4 outsold XB1 at amazon, you cant really judge whether the same thing happened at other retail stores as well.

Yep, obviously this has to be taken into massive consideration!

I would never use amazon as a major indicator of how well something is selling, but what I am saying is last time it took days for amazon to sell stock but globally the PS4 still outsold everything. Having stock that takes 2 or 3 days to sell out means nothing right now... the context is useful but only when there is lots of stock sitting on shelves for weeks etc.

Lol no, it's common sense.

Amazon isn't the only marker for overall consumer demand, but if Amazon has an item in stock, that does mean it's available in that market, nationwide. Granted, everyone doesn't buy from Amazon, but there isn't much of an argument for an item being "unavailable" where they live if they could order online.

My personal take on the stock availability: post Japan launch should mean more units are being re-allocated to alternate markets.

I won't claim to know what percentage of overall production yield was withheld for the Japan launch (3.5m units allocated), but I'm assuming current production rates of about 1m units per month for all markets.

I'd like accurate data on production rates since all I have to work off of are the number of units sold per month, but I seem to remember hearing 1m/month production rates last year.

When I start seeing PS4s on shelves at retail, then I'll take that to mean that initial demand is finally being met. I saw the first PS4 sold at retail last night; the first one I've seen "in the wild." It was being picked up by the customer at customer service, presumably placed on hold.

I don't know if you mean available for weeks, or if existing stock isn't moving.

Obviously, if the same console is sitting on a shelf at retail for weeks, that's really bad, but this is rarely the case when it comes to consoles. Stock goes out, more stock comes in from the distribution warehouse on a regular basis.

When it comes to a high demand item, it's generally a good sign to see lots of stock constantly moving onto and off shelves to consumer hands.

Of course when they're never out of stock at any decent sized retail outlet that can stock more than a few units at a time, that could mean anything from production rates have either met with current consumer demand to an indicator of stock glut due to overproduction/distribution.

Incidentally, the PS4 is still in stock at Amazon (US), and is the current number one seller in video games.

Titanfall (game) is #3.

Titanfall (XB1 bundle) is #14.

My conclusion is that no, Titanfall is not to blame for Amazon receiving a large shipment of PS4s that are selling better than anything else in their video games department.

The hype is dwindling due the Titanfall and price cut news. Sony cannot cut the price this early to compete, they are still losing money per device and the company is not in a good situation either. Bundling games will not be really effective due to Titanfall hype because even if you bundle Killzone, Infamous, and BF4 for free it wouldn't stand a chance against the Titanfall. The game is everywhere. I follow lots of tech sites and even the ones that never post anything about games are hyped for the Titanfall. If you don't believe me, go to The Verge website. There is an article about Titanfall pretty much everyday, sometimes two in the same day.

I'm over generalising because i'm tired :) but I'm just trying to say that the comments about hype is dwindling and its all because of Titanfall, well its a little too early to state that when well PS4 has got to meet demand at some point and 2. It went straight in at No 1 above titanfall...  etc etc.

We're five days from Titanfall launch and the bundle is sitting at #14 on Amazon US. Yes, that is a limited window and indicator into demand, but still.

I can pick up an XB1 at just about any retail outlet that sells them today. It's an easy argument that this is directly because of the Titanfall bundle which is the same package plus a free copy of the hottest game to hit the platform. I'm at a loss for words for anyone who would be buying the basic SKU currently but, XB1 availability has been like this in my market (San Francisco) since January.

With regards to the PS4, I've seen exactly one at retail to date as it was being picked up from hold by the customer. I don't think this situation will last much longer, but clearly demand is exceeding current supply.

I predicted/guessed (a guess is a prediction made without having hard production numbers, distribution figures, etc.) that both the PS4 and the XB1 would be readily available by Q2 2014, meaning initial launch demand had been met. So that would give my guess until April to be on target, not that my guess means anything. As of right now, I'm giving that guess a 50/50 shot, but that would mean I should start seeing PS4s sporadically on shelves over the next few weeks.

Yes you are right, if you wanted an XBO you wouldnt necessarily buy off amazon anyway as you can easily go into any store and buy one, so Amazon in this case is as you say not a good indicator of XBO sales.

I would certainly expect PS4 to start appearing more and more on shelves over the next two/three weeks.. am expecting them to get a handle on it by the end of March.
