That is very true actually. Platformers may age better than any other genre and its the same reason we can go back to Mario Bros, DKC, Sonic, etc in the 90's and still enjoy them
probably not for most people..
..i'm pretty prejudice against fighters as i feel like it is an "incomplete" genre by modern standards. but you pay for fun. is 40 hours of playtime really worth less in one genre than another?! probably not. that said, a technical marvel like GTA or uncharted you really get a feeling that your money went into creating something big which makes it a bit easier to justify.
I don't often purchase any games full price, but when it comes to platformers, I especially don't purchase those at full price. As good of a game as it may be, most platformers are shorter than the average title.
I think there's a misconception that a 2D platformer, as it's one of the oldest game genres and generally isn't cutting edge from a technology perspective, doesn't need as much effort to make and so instantly the perceived value to a lot of people is lost.
Personally I'll pay $60 (well, £40-50) for any game if I feel it's quality is high enough for me. I do particularly enjoy platformers and so I try to support the devs by buying these games earlier rather than later.
I think it comes down to replayability, quality of the experience and longevity. In the case of Nintendo platformers, you know that youre generally going to be getting the best there is so you will fork out the full asking price. For other companies be it SEGA, Ubisoft or X there will always be the lingering doubt over if the game will be worth the asking price. Sonic games are hit and miss while Rayman was missing for X Years.
I think if its a new IP, it needs to have something more than just being a platformer behind it to sell. If you look at new IP platformers on Wii, PS3 and 360 there are very few that sold well enough to expand the IP. Outside of movie videogames, there is very little at all. Despite this, we have the low cost platformers selling well as digital downloads - Thomas Was Alone, 'Splosion Man, Braid, Journey, Spelunky to name a few.
With the low development costs that these titles should have, I think a low pricepoint is perfect for them. They dont have the reputation to stand toe to toe with Mario at the $60 pricepoint, so the best thing for them to do is avoid the competition at all costs.

I keep meaning to play it, but there is always something else that bumps it back -_- My friend wants me to get it on vita so i can play it with him so whenever he gets it i will.
Loved origins though. Id say origins and DKCR were my two fav retail platformers last gen. Digital would prob go to SuperMeatboy and BattleBlockTheater.
