Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is 2D Platformers still worth $60?

Odd im asking this question after purchasing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze but it did get me wondering something.  We have indie devs able to create very similar experiences for the fraction of the cost.  On the other hand Rayman and Donkey Kong are also top quality when it comes to how the game looks and sounds.   Even then 2D platformers were always meant for gameplay first.  Good thing both Rayman and DKC plays amazing as well, but then i look at Rayman's sales.  Even though Rayman is outstanding it seems to be hard to sale at a full $60 pricetag.  Instead it seems to steadily sale overtime.

DKC and Mario on the other hand has the benifit of being first party and having insanely popular mascots, but outside the big 2D platformers like Mario, Rayman, and Donkey Kong could you really justify $60 for a 2D platformer?  In other words, if it didnt have an already well known mascot how would you feel about a new ip $60 2D platformer?

Either answer is fine with me, just curious to see what you guys think

edit: DKC was $50, mistake on my part.

You paid $60 FOR DKC:TC!?!

I only paid $49.99!

And yes, it's still worth it. If a game is good, 2d/3d doesn't matter to me. I loved Rayman Legends too!

It may have been $49.99, i  got a discount and then bought something else with it so i didnt pay that much attention.

And yes, Rayman is amazing :D  Though i havent played Legends yet, just origins so far.

DK was $40 as was Rayman Legends. Where did you buy them for $60? Unless you bought the Wii U, or 7th gen versions.

I´m not sure there´s an objective answer here.

In my opinion, a very high quality platformer in all aspects (gameplay, visual, audio, replayability), regardless whether it´s 2D or 3D, is worth those $60.

Wasn't Rayman Legends $60 when it first came out last year?  As for DKC that was a mistake on my part......almost as bad my pathetic title mistake :'(

I'll answer the question though. $60 comes from value. I know ID do more in Rayman than DK, so it's worth more to me personally.

Worth more than lot of other garbage. They age like fine wine too. The good ones atleast. Amazing level of replayability. Most other games/genres i just beat and move on.

This^ it's not 60 for either.  However if any of your friends would like to buy my game for $55, I'm in. LOL
