I think there's a misconception that a 2D platformer, as it's one of the oldest game genres and generally isn't cutting edge from a technology perspective, doesn't need as much effort to make and so instantly the perceived value to a lot of people is lost.
Personally I'll pay $60 (well, £40-50) for any game if I feel it's quality is high enough for me. I do particularly enjoy platformers and so I try to support the devs by buying these games earlier rather than later.
