I think truly 2.5 D (the style of, i think, Shadow Complex?) would be best. Other M had that in some segments where the camera panned more sideways, and it gives you more freedom to engage enemies and would make use of the 3D on the 3DS. A toned-down version of Other M's aim assist would work too, so you still get to choose whether you want to shoot up, down, horizontal, or diagonal, but you don't have to worry about being misaligned in the Z-dimension.

That is all good but the words, "Also plays on 2DS" is the new Nintendo seal of quality. So, it has to work well without the whole 3D gimmick. I'd like one more on the Wii U but they seriously need to bring a new ip/experience. There has been significant lack of those in 8th gen compared to last. That surely is another topic though.

Yep that sounds like Nintendo; suck the dick of a system that doesn't need help and screw over the Wii U yet again.

The key is that Metroid on Wii U would be expensive, and doing it in 2D would be one of those "games nobody asked for," basically.

Other M showed that Metroid is a hard sell on consoles in a certain respect (having absolutely nothing to do with "Authorization", the story, or any of Sakamoto's shenanigans): Metroid games are too short to really demand a console experience any more, unless you make them a more sedately-paced First Person Adventure like the Prime games. So it's an issue of niche, expense, and possible sales. Even if Wii U was selling gangbusters, i'd still say a 3DS game would make more sense in terms of Metroid's core design.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I'm pretty sure Other M gutting nearly everything that was loved about the series and being an all-around awful game had a lot to do with its sales.

Again, i'm saying aside from all that. The game is short, but it is short in a way that is purely Metroid, much like Fusion. It's a hard sell to do such a short game anymore.

Wait, Metroid games are short? Other M sold poorly because it was the worst in the series in terms of critical reception, and IMO it was just not that good a game.

What Metroid game on consoles besides other M is short tho? Super Metroid was the shortest one on consoles I have played, and it took me like 15 hours.

As far as Metroid 3DS goes, yes please. 2D, super metroid style, no story, isolation, music, new powerups, etc. I would also hope a Wii U Metroid would get announced.

I dunno, I think a game of that length could still be sold if it was very well done.

I'm saying a shorter game with emphasis on replayability like Metroid would definitely be a better fit for handhelds. In terms of sales potential (remember, Metroid caps out at about 3 million at the best of times), of length, and of development expense, 3DS is the better choice.

What? Other M did not sell well because it was a very mediocre game. Most Metroid fans hated it and even some non Metroid fans believe the game has problems . If the Metroid franchised is tailored more towards the Western audience then it does have a chance of selling very well. Sadly, I doubt Nintendos pride will allow them to ditch their Japanese audience.
