The key is that Metroid on Wii U would be expensive, and doing it in 2D would be one of those "games nobody asked for," basically.


Other M showed that Metroid is a hard sell on consoles in a certain respect (having absolutely nothing to do with "Authorization", the story, or any of Sakamoto's shenanigans): Metroid games are too short to really demand a console experience any more, unless you make them a more sedately-paced First Person Adventure like the Prime games. So it's an issue of niche, expense, and possible sales. Even if Wii U was selling gangbusters, i'd still say a 3DS game would make more sense in terms of Metroid's core design.
