Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Predicts 3 Million Global 2014 Sales for Wii U

If the Wii U can't hit 5 million this year, then it's never hitting 5 million for a year ever.

They have to hit 5 million this year to have any chance of getting to 20 million LTD (sadly its come to that).

You can quote me on this but no home console in history has 39% YOY sales or higher except the Wii according to VGchartz number.

I agree 100% besides MK8 there are no more casual BIG titles. So I think Wii U sales will be like this week till Nov. Black Friday sales. This site says 48k this week, 42k before that, 47k, 58k, 121k. You can easily see Wii U sales dropped almost 3x from the holiday period+SM3DW release, but they're back to normal for the Wii U. FY/EI Wii U did 36k Feb 2 2103. well that's 25% more for this week compared to last year. 33k before that, 37k, 48k, 123k.

So it seems Wii U is sellin 10k-12k better per each week of Januarary so far compared to last years. If that holds up year round that's basically 50k more sales each month than last year. Articles say Wii U sold 3.61 million last year. 50k extra times 10 more months till BF/Holiday shopping that's only a half a million extra Wii U sales. 4.25million this year and possibly a temp spike for MK8 so why not 5 million.

They should sell 10 million consoles if they can keep their pace, but that could very well change with PS4/XB1 on the market unlike last year. Especially next gen titles are coming like ISS and TF. IMHO there are to many variables to forecast Wii U correctly imho. But the more titles that get canned/pushed back/delayed on Wii U can only = less chance of Nintendo hitting their mark. If they want more sales they have to get more games out steadily, fix their VC with more games, port DS games etc., just do more in every area. That CPU, memory, tablet controller and GPU they went with...god help them.

5m+ seems more like it, imo.

A bit low. I am banking on 5-7 million ( even if the number is going to be closer to  5 million)

That's interesting, I actually didn't know that. That said the Wii U had such a poor 2013 that it might be primed to have a 40% YoY bump or there abouts.

Kinda like its pretty hard for a seasoned bodybuilder to add 40% to their bench press in a year, but for a skinny kid who just started working out, he probably can bench more than 40% than what he started at a year later just because he started at such a patheticly low level (lol).

I still don't see why people think the 3DS version of Smash is going to cannibalize the Wii U version. The only hype i see for Smash Bros is really for the Wii U version, and the 3DS version will require multiple 3DSes to play with friends...

I feel you, but that 2013 was bad before the narrative had become the Wii U was bust and before it had any current-gen opposition. Now, PS4 and X1 are out and articles in even mainstream journalistic sources are like 'Nintendo Needs to Fix the Wii U' or 'Nintendo Loses Metric Crapton of Money Over Failing Wii U.'

If it was at 'such a pathetically low level' when it had no competition and not everyone realized it was going to get no 3rd party support, then why would it suddenly blossom now that those huge advantages are gone?

Internet hype really doesn't mean anything. If it did, Wonderful 101 should've sold at least 500k. The Nintendo community especially are very loud/vocal online, but in actual market reality, that's a very small minority, especailly the Nintendo online community often times what they lobby for doesn't even reflect the actual Nintendo shopping community.

can't see wiiU doing worse than last year (3.232M). 4M. maybe 5M.

I'll agree to an extent, but Smash has never been on a handheld before, either. Every existing Smash Bros fan has played it on a console, so i still have a hard time believing 3DS will siphon off that much of it, at least outside of Japan. There's a good reason the hype is on the Wii U version.
