Forums - Sony - The Order 1886 runs 4xMSAA; 1920x800 vs 1920x1080 "not set in stone yet"

The black bars are rendered in game guys... the output is native 1080p with the GPI rendering the black bars... of course it is less intensive to render a mono color square than a 3D model but it is rendered... so technically the game is native 1080p.

What about 1080p with just 2XMSAA? seems the obvious halfway between the original 2 options. If it's not 1080p it will get flamed and trolled just for that, I have no doubt. What happened to Sony mandating 1080p?

Right now I'm more inclined to 4xMSAA... I like the black bars and the game is absolutely shaper with tho AA.

Most action movies have a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. And these bluray movies are still considered 1080p even though there are black bars. The Order is no different.

No upscaling occurs on a 1080p display with The Order. It is not like Ryse, which is upscaled from 900p to 1080p. So it is technically wrong to call The Order 800p.....

Thank god they're not bolting on multiplayer just to pad the game time. I'm actually saddened that people would actually want mp that wouldn't even serve a purpose.

It seemed to work out for TLoU. A game that didn't necessarily need it to justify it's price added it anyway. And it worked out great. You don't like multiplayer, don't play it.

For every TLOU you have a Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, and Batman: Arkham Origins. I like multiplayer just fine when it serves a purpose.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

ethomaz, the game looks really good but your comments smack of damage control.  You're trying too hard - stop with the 'black bars are rendered in-game so technically the game is native 1080p' bullshit.  It's pretty clear that the developer cut down the amount of image processing by making it 1920 x 800 because the GPU wasn't up to doing 1080p with 4MSAA (and no, I agree it's not 800p because it is still 1920x800).  I like the trade-off becuase I see aliasing even on 1080p too if AA isn't used.  The PS4 is a powerful console but given we are at such an early stage of the console's development it isn't yet the all singing, all dancing machine you want it to be.

As Mark Cerny said, the full power of the machine will not be unleashed by developers for another couple of years.  1080p with 4MSAA will no doubt be the norm at that stage. Considering there is no multiplayer, 30fps is probably a good fit too (but again, will have been due to GPU limitations).

The shit RYSE got for being 900p/30fps was unwarranted.  Currently the best looking game on either console, in my opinion.  The Order 1886 may steal that crown.  It's time some of the shit stirrers acknowledge great looking (and playing) games without nit-picking just because they are exclusive and not on their console of choice.

Yeah, that's about right...performance difference between 2xMSAA and 4xMSAA is somewhere around 35%.

PS4 hardware is weak for 1080p with 4xMSAA... sad

1080p looks pretty good even without MSAA. I think you would need a pretty big TV to really notice any jaggies. My PC can't even play a game like BF3 @ 1080p with 4XMSAA at max settings and 60fps.

Unless you're kidding, I think maybe you're expecting a lot so early in the generation.

Not kidding... I what minimum 1080p with 2xMSAA for all games on PS4... my HDTV have a common size (51") and aliasing is pretty noticeable even with 1080p.

Yeah that's a good size TV.....My 42" doesn't show so much.

Sorry... care to explain? Because I didn't make any damage controle in this thread... otherwise I was critic because PS4 can't hold 1080p with 4xMSAA.

I think you talking about other guys.

The game render 1080p... there is no upscale... no matter what you think or not.

ugh some of you people need to go and watch the videos they made about cinematic selections they have made. why they chose this aspect ration, and what they are trying to achieve.

I am Torgo, I take care of the place while the master is away.

"Hes the clown that makes the dark side fun.. Torgo!"

Ha.. i won my bet, but i wasnt around to gloat because im on a better forum!  See ya guys on Viz

Seems a lot of people won't be satisfied until it renders in 1920x1080 and downscales it to 1920x800 to get the correct aspect ratio, which wouldn't look as good as using a 1:1 pixel ratio.

You don't just add black bars to fix performance issues, aspect ratio affects how most of the game is build. Same way you can't simply add black bars to make a 4:3 show, 16:9. The composition is then ruined. A correctly done 2.4:1 aspect ratio has a higher load on the rendering engine as more geometry is in view due to the wider field of view.

To repeat my example again, which image has a higher load on the rendering engine:

You save 26% of pixels that have to be rendered, but you end up rendering 35% more geometry. Rendering less pixels definitely helps, but if you've tinkered around with fov on pc games you probably know that increasing the fov can have a substantial hit on performance.

Question : Black bars are added by the TV or are already in the game ? ( to know whether it's 1080p technically )

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:
