Forums - Microsoft - What's so great about Titanfall?

The haters are giving it more attention than the people actually looking forward to it.

Made by a studio that created one of their favorite FPS games ever.

Personally I'm not super hyped, looks like a lot of fun though.

My question would be: would it be (as) hyped if it didn't have "mechs" and had, whatever, "hover tanks" or something?
Because I don't see an inherent gameplay difference between those, they have the foot soldier/heavy vehicle dynamic.
Other differences vs. other FPS would still exist unchanged. Is that hype worthy? Or "for sure" mega franchise material?
I'm not really sure, because most of those other details are easily portable to other FPS, even if the recent large FPS franchises may have diverged from those approaches.
SO leaving that aside, is the mere imagery/idea of "mecha" itself a guarantee of hype-worthiness or a mega-franchise status?
But "mecha" is not exclusive to Titanfall developers, "riding inside a biped robot" is not anybody's exclusive IP, any more than zombies are,
so anybody else is free to release a "mecha" FPS, perhaps taking note of any shift in FPS conventions that Titanfall did.
Perhaps Titanfall will have some loyalty, but why is a last-gen engine game so worthy of irrational loyalty for combining non-unique "mecha" with an evolution on FPS dynamics?

The best I can hazard is that FPS players LIKE and WANT a new major FPS franchise, and anything that looks like it could be an alternative to the current AAA franchises will be gobbled up like that.  That theory doesn't actually depend on any true extraordinary quality of Titanfall, but merely it being "sufficient" and not having competition.

BTW, I take the "It will also come out on PS4" sentiment as a RESPONSE to the hype,
not pre/co-existing the hype, i.e. positing that the hype was independent of XBone exclusivity.

Honestly tell me you don't think at least some of the critics giving out awards hadn't been bought out by M$, go on... and try to make it sound like you believe it. We're in a time where reviewers from the likes of IGN, GameSpot, Kotaku etc. may as well have the big name publishers logos tattooed on the foreheads. Microsoft got exposure because it paid for exposure. That's how it works. Sure, one or two of them may have genuinely meant it, but money speaks louder than integrity in this industry sadly.

Actually the fact that the stuff with MS and Machinima came to light solidifies my confidence in unbiased reviewers. All gaming outlets were eager to jump that story. That's because exposing bribes is much more profitable than taking the bribes.

And yes I do think that most if not all of the professional reviewers of Titanfall were absolutely unbiased(though probably swayed a bit by the next gen hype). Even if some were paid it makes absolutely no difference. When 60 of 70 reviewers praise a game because of their unbiased opinion then that game must have something. The 10 paid reviewers also probably would've praised the game without the bribe.

Just turn it around. Have you heard anything negative from the game? MS and EA couldn't possible have successfully bribed all of them.

Good point... I guess we'll have to wait and see if it lives up to their claims.

I don't see it changing my mind on the genre though I'm open to the possibility; stilll perhaps it will be the game changer the genre needs to stop it growing stale. Thanks guys for actually answering my questions, it's why I like this forum; you ask a question you get a decent discussion and an answer. While it still seems, at least in part, to be excessive hype and crowd mentality overtaking; the reasons given do actually explain why people are so excited and there does seem to be a genuine reason to expect innovation in gameplay and quality. Let's hope they deliver on what's expected, and hopefully EA won't cram in too many goddamn microtransactions.

They actually already confirmed that there will be no microtransactions. But who needs those if you have tons of DLC in the pipeline.

The game actually disqualifies completely in 3 different areas for me so it will never get into my hands. But I can still appreciate what they've tried to create.

Even more so it's a new IP and successful new IPs mean developers and publishers taking more risks. Just think of all the great new IPs of last gen which resulted in massive franchises that are now funding new IPs.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

It is no secret the past generation was head over heels for FPSs. This is just another shooter with pretty graphics and wait for it...mechas. The mobility aspect of the game is actually pretty appealing but you're right, it is not revolutionary in anyway but there is a lot of hype for it because it is from the makers of CoD and Xbox One exclusive. If it wasn't for those to facts (mostly the latter) it would not be as high acclaimed as it will most likely be.

"Trick shot? The trick is NOT to get shot." - Lucian

The double jumping and verticality, combined with the on-foot and in-mech gameplay looks like fun and a nice breath of fresh air for the genre.

Also, I have not seen people come out of trying a game being this giddy about it in a long time (the original Halo perhaps). Even jaded game journalists were waxing lyrically about it after various conferences.

But I think the XBone exclusivity does not explain why e.g. PS4 fans went along with the hype and were interested in playing it on PS4. Well, I guess you must distinguish that people "interested in playing it" don't necessarily see it as the next coming of Christ. So a mediocre but plausibly attractive to lowes common denominator game doesn't necessarily have across the board "mega hype" status. MS and fanbois were perhaps just happy to play up that "sufficient" status into something greater because it was exclusive.

Its a great looking game but I agree, so much can go wrong with it, we just can't tell yet if its gonna be a big franchise.

Nothing, and MS is dumb to put their eggs on a FPS basket, they should invest in variety and deepness, not shallow quick-fix FPSs from those Infinity Ward leftover losers.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Errr... the IW "leftover losers" are still over at Infinity Ward, making flawed CoD games based on the formula that the people who left IW created. The staff at IW now is a shell of its former self, most of the important people left for Respawn or other companies.

You know, initially, this was a bullet point for why I thought this game would be alright. Then I remembered that that same bullet point was used for HAZE: "HAZE is gonna be great! It's being made by Free Radical which is the team of people that made Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark and Time Splitters!"

Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark, and Time Splitters were classics, yet HAZE ended up a turd, despite hype and praise before it was released

Now I don't wanna use "these are the guys that made CoD4" as a talking point for TF anymore, because the symptoms are the same

Yeah except gamers have had a chance to play Titanfall now and the people who did are echoing those same claims made by the press. Also, you can find a few articles hyping up any turd, Haze included. But did Haze win 60 or whatever E3 awards? Not even close to the same mount of praise or hype.
