Forums - Microsoft - What's so great about Titanfall?

This happens with every big (and some small) game that gets the kind of praise this has received pretty much unanimously from every professional and amateur that has had the privilege of playing them. Stop acting like this is some unique phenomenon with this game.

This feels like a stealth troll exercise ...

I'm not going to get into too much detail about Titanfall because it's overly apparent by your original post that doing so would be a massive waste of time. You hate FPS so anything I list in detail will just be dismissed. But I gotta LOL at the idea that "omg we totally dont need another shooter!" but you're probably ok with another open world game? This isn't a PS4 vs Xbone thing, I am wondering if the thread was instead full of people saying "fuck yeah man infamous is going to be awesom its going to sell more than the other two combined!" and all that other stuff people have said here, would this thread exist only in an alternate Infamous skin? Probably not. Yet I could ask the same thing, what's so special about Infamous? It looks extremely generic and the powers look boring compared to the first game and even the second. The difference in graphics in screens they put out and actual gameplay demos look worlds apart. But I won't make threads about these things, I just chalk it up to difference of opinion.

Now, onto the actual question. I am hyped for it because it looks like shooters redefined. No kill streak rewards, gun on gun action, incredibly tight controls, tried and true twitch gunplay. And the main two reasons, the verticality of the game and the Titans. They are game changers. And oh yeah, the difference between this and The Order/whatever Within, is this game has received virtually nothing but universal praise, has had an alpha trial, and there are tons of real actual gameplay videos out. Not to mention it's only a month away from release, so of course hype will be higher.

Hmm, people are responding faster than I can respond. My last post was before I got a chance to read this post.

Fair enough, I can only presume the things you mentioned will have a massive change on the gameplay and that's a good thing I suppose. I do still stand by my comments that we don't need any more bloody shooters, there are far too many; especially on the new generation which launched with Call Of Duty, Battlefield, and Killzone; and it's not been long since Bioshock Infinite and Metro: Last Light where released. With major franchises releasing yearly it's in my opinion simply oversaturating the market.

As for sandbox games, there's more of them than we need but not as many and honestly InFamous isn't so special. The first game was passable, but I prefered Prototype and even Sleeping Dogs, Remember Me, and DmC: Devil May Cry where more interesting to me, though they're less and less similar from InFamous. InFamous 2 was in my opinion very derivative, and as such I only played it for a few hours. Second Son though, that looks like it's got some interesting new takes on the powers. The fun in these games is often on the movement, and smoke is a great medium for that; think Nightcrawler and you'll understand I'm sure. Now, it could be generic, but I'm looking forward to it all the same. That said, I don't expect it to sell more than a few million units, maybe 5 million if it's good; hopefully more, but unlikely considering the platform has a limited audience; which means it'll also likely be labled a "failure". The thing that makes this a bad comparison though is InFamous is already an established franchise so it at least has a fanbase, Titanfall has nothing... that said I was unaware of the Alpha Trials going public, I thought it was all protected under non-disclosure still.

If you know yourself that you have a huge bias against shooters(and MS apparently)why make this thread?

I'm not a shooter fan myself but I can easily see why Titanfall is so hyped. I know you can't see it but it is definitely something fresh and something that truly feels next gen.

Also you are apparently not reading the same forum as I am because The Order is massively (over-)hyped here.

I've been ill recently so have been away from the forums for a couple of weeks, but no I've honestly not seen hype over The Order. As for my biases, I readily admit them, and yes I'd put Microsoft as my least favourite of the big three, but I don't especially hate them, they simply focus on genres and styles I have little interest in. As for my comments on M$ and their underhanded tactics... that's because they're a multinatipnal company, and I don't trust them as far as I can comfortably spit them. They're all out to make money and if anti-consumer tactics will work they will use them, M$ has been especially guilty of this as of late; but I'm not so naive as to think Sony or Nintendo won't do the same as soon as they think they can get away with it. One of my favourite consoles is actually the original Xbox, which I still use to this day as my primary DVD player. Only a fool emotionally connects with a company, we are but numbers to them.

The good thing is that alot of people have played the Beta now and the hype just seem to go through the roof :).

no no, apparently "no one has ever played it" and those that did and heaped praise upon it only did so because of a "massive fuck-off bribe" MS gave them.

Honestly tell me you don't think at least some of the critics giving out awards hadn't been bought out by M$, go on... and try to make it sound like you believe it. We're in a time where reviewers from the likes of IGN, GameSpot, Kotaku etc. may as well have the big name publishers logos tattooed on the foreheads. Microsoft got exposure because it paid for exposure. That's how it works. Sure, one or two of them may have genuinely meant it, but money speaks louder than integrity in this industry sadly.

Actually the fact that the stuff with MS and Machinima came to light solidifies my confidence in unbiased reviewers. All gaming outlets were eager to jump that story. That's because exposing bribes is much more profitable than taking the bribes.

And yes I do think that most if not all of the professional reviewers of Titanfall were absolutely unbiased(though probably swayed a bit by the next gen hype). Even if some were paid it makes absolutely no difference. When 60 of 70 reviewers praise a game because of their unbiased opinion then that game must have something. The 10 paid reviewers also probably would've praised the game without the bribe.

Just turn it around. Have you heard anything negative from the game? MS and EA couldn't possible have successfully bribed all of them.

E3 was well before the deal was reached for the game to be a complete MS exclusive, back when people were still "waiting for it to come to Playstation". Doesn't make any sense for MS to go out and bribe people. Also, the fact that the praise has been basically universal gushing, tells me the game is just good. But feel free to continue donning your tin foil hat shouting conspiracy.

Good point... I guess we'll have to wait and see if it lives up to their claims.

I don't see it changing my mind on the genre though I'm open to the possibility; stilll perhaps it will be the game changer the genre needs to stop it growing stale. Thanks guys for actually answering my questions, it's why I like this forum; you ask a question you get a decent discussion and an answer. While it still seems, at least in part, to be excessive hype and crowd mentality overtaking; the reasons given do actually explain why people are so excited and there does seem to be a genuine reason to expect innovation in gameplay and quality. Let's hope they deliver on what's expected, and hopefully EA won't cram in too many goddamn microtransactions.
