Does anyone know how much Microsoft paid for the IP?

I heard around $100 million which i think cheap.

I assumed it would have cost around that.  It's also not that cheap if you think about it.  It took four games f or the series to reach 20 million.  Having no idea how many copies were sold at full MSRP, how many were sold during price drops etc, we'll just say that Epic got on average $10 each copy sold which is probably a bit high.  That's $200 million in profit in over seven years, where they just made $100 million just by giving up a license they have no more interest in.

I never looked at it that way. That does make this a big win for Epic then.

Microsoft has the money and is okay if they take a little loss just so Sony doesnt get Gears.

Good move for Microsoft

it depends on 3 things:

1) how much money did MS pay for the IP. the larger the sum the better for epic.
2) how well does the next gears sell. if it flops epic got off well, it a huge success maybe epic got screwed.
3) how desperate is BlackTusk in need of an existing IP to mask their growing pains of being a new studio. even a mediocre gears is better than creating another too human.

..but yes, i think epic wanted MS to think they would take the IP to playstation to drive up it's value.

Regardless if they did or not I think they were happy to get rid of it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Even if they paid $100m (which I doubt they did - its probably much lower) then its not a bad deal.
And if you think about it, its probably cheaper then investing in a brand new IP altogether and taking a risk of failing. So many of Sony's new games have failed, and only some have found success. MS doesn't want to take that risk with a new IP, so they thought they'd just buy Gears which is guaranteed to sell 3-4 million units at least. 3 million units is more than what Ryse, or Sunset Overdrive will sell.

Epic got rid of an IP they weren't going to work on and MS got a huge IP that brought them a ton of success already. Personally I think the rumored price is extremely cheap considering how big the IP is. I mean, MS supposedly paid over 50 million just for timed exclusive GTA DLC. 100 million for the entire Gears IP is a bargain in comparison.

Personally I can't wait to see what they do with it. The idea that it's "creatively bankrupt" is silly. Do people consider Uncharted to be creatively bankrupt? I see people hyped for the next in that series all the time. Yet it had the same history. 3 games by the creator then 1 less successful and less acclaimed knock off made by someone else. Look what Retro did to Metroid. Writing it off instantly is foolish imho.

Gears ended with Gears 3.

Yea

Actually I think MS is behind the rumours so they could make the announcement seem bigger.

MS have such bad priorities. You know what they should have done? Bought Bioware when they were still working on ME as an exclusive. That..right..there would have been a system-selling move.

What did we get? Lionhead exclusives and one of the most overhyped, garbage RPG franchise of all time.
