iOS is closer market than Sony or Microsoft. Plus they could just do handheld, which is the better idea.

They just need to rebrand. The thing with the "core" market is that they are actually not that bias. By core, I dont mean the COD players, I mean people really invested in videogames as medium, not just one or 2 games. The early adopters/trend setters will always be these guys and if Nintendo could launch a system with an incredible launch window and first year, they could easily win them over. Rebranding from their current childish/family image (ala N64, SNES etc), plus the support of major parties would allow them to sell a ton of systems next gen. The crux is that they come in early before the PS5, XboxNext but unlike the wii u provide hardware which is future proof and bound to run the next gen hardware of games relatively easily, even if somewhat scaled down.

Even if the wii u had a stronger line up, I still would have been somewhat weary that it wouldnt recieve 3rd party next gen titles like FF15, Witcher 3 etc. I have no problem with buying a 1st party box, but I definitely wouldnt for the price the wii U is at.

Well to be honest I would like to see a Zelda game on PS4 in 1080p with high res textures. I mean even the Wii U games look fantastic already I wonder what Nintendo could do on a PS4 level hardware.

Yes, that is true. I agree with it. I think part of the reason Wii U is underperforming is because people are getting their Nintendo fix on the 3DS for the last 2 years with the barrage of game releases. Nintendo has to release more games on the Wii U for people to take the leap on the home console.

Sega lost third party support in a similar way, yes, but the writing on the wall for Segas demise was on the wall. Nintendo wont die, they just lost the core market because they lost third parties over a dedcade ago. The core third party market has basically learned not to depend on Nintendo. Nintendo's sales would be amazing if they spread their games across their competitions platforms and keep the portables going. Sega as a console and handheld brand in general was phased off and their third party was just terrible because the market had surpassed their brand of first party. That and Nintendo's hold on third parties didn't really allow Sega to get multiplats until they upped their marketshare.

Why would Nintendo go 3rd party now? It doesn't make sense. As soon as the cost for producing the Wii U comes down, the 3DS will start to make money for Nintendo, and simply not just off putting the losses of the WIi U. Sure, they won't earn as much money as they did during the DS/Wii era, but they'll do good enough to make a come back next gen.

Going third party would mean: paying royalties to the other console makers, thus losing out on money. And the PS4/X1 crowed doesn't seem to be too eager to play Nintendo games; how much did LBP sell? Or LBP Karting/Playstation All-STar? Not even the Jak and Daxter series, by everybodys favorites Naughty Dog, did well compared to Nintendo's games. And that was on the PS3 AND PS2 (which had a user base of 150+m), which arguably has a more diverse library than the X360. Therefore we have to ask ourselves, is there a big enough crowed on these consoles (PS4/X1) to earn back the royalties Nintendo is paying Sony/MS? Probably not, going by other games similar to those Nintendo is making.

This is hard facts backed up with sales of historically similar games to those of Nintendo. This tells us that Nintendo probably wouldn't do as well on these consoles as some would wish they did. Would the Nintendo faithful follow Nintendo to other platforms? Maybe, but we can't be certain about that. They might just as well go to the 3DS for their Nintendo fix.

Nintendo would be far better off just doing handheld games for the rest of the generation, while working on next gen console(s).
