Forums - Sales - Seven early takeaways from the eighth generation

This was a very interesting read, many good points explained in a concise manner. I don't think I would argue against any of your points.

i hear alot of people complain about Wii U being anti Wii and whatever. But what would be an alternative? Where they just supposed to make a more powerful Wii? Pretty sure an actually Wii 2 wouldnt have exactly flown of the shelves either. Would have done better just by the nature of being cheaper but not by much.

That logic would mean every apple iphone iteration should sell like crap too, right? However, apple changes very little and people buy them like crazy every year. (same with galaxy s series now too)

Wii 2
$200-$250
Improved HD capabilities even higher than Wii U
Same Pro controller (IN BOX) is a very cheap way to push at "core" market and 3rd parties
Enhanced wiimote - better tracking/motion and built-in batteries. Also include in box.

Party games like mario party are not system sellers. So Nintendoland-ish game was bad choice.

But a better, larger wii sports/resort plus wii fit u day one would have been better option. Along with the other games of course.

That would have done a lot better, even if I really liked ZombiU and the gamepad in general.

i agree, its a shame that Sony has dropped the ball with the vita, especially here in NA.

The Wii was dangerous for Nintendo, it allowed them to create the disaster that is the Wii U. Iwata thought they could create another Wii, the audience moved on to mobiles. He lacked the foresight to see the bubble was about to burst.
3rd party problem was never addressed, the Wii was successfull and their own sw sold great, so no need for that.
Nintendo's western branches lost autonomy, Mario was selling and the success of Wii only proved further that things didn't need to change.
He didnt care about online while Sony and MS built their infrastructure since 2005/2006. Nintndo is an entire gen late in the game.
All the problems that could've been addressed a gen earlier, are addressed now, because the Wii made them ignore those small problems.

Nintendo can't compete like Sony because they are not Sony. They can't have a powerful console and good 3rd party support as 3rd parties simply won't support Nintendo as Nintendo is too much of a software competition.

Seems like cheep excuse for Nintys shitty 3rd party support, since in no way do they compete directly with the big 3rd party franchises.  So i dont see how nin is to much competition for them to support it.

You missed his point. Wii U is a drastic change from Wii. While you seem to be arguing its the same. Rol is arguing that Nintendo should have continued with Wii's platform and that would have brought success.

Software is software and the genre is less important. People only have limited $$ to spend. If a Mario Kart and GTA launch on same day... MK wins GTA sells less. Completely different genres but MK will win in those who would want both games. (proven when GTA4 was outsold by MKWii even though GTA had a combined larger userbase offered on)

Same as movies. A Pixar cartoon releases and it will destroy a horror fest or action movie. Simply because the mass consumers will only choose one experience at that time.

There is a reason Nintendo sells more software than EA who technically releases more content each year. Nintendo IPs simply hold a better sway for average consumer.

MSony don't offer that same large competition in almost all genres as Nintendo does. Nintendo makes pretty much every genre except FPS and bloodfests sandbox/etc.

Lets not pretand Ninty floods their console with games each week scaring of 3rd parties.

A competant release date decision solves what you posted.

Issue is if im a dev im worried ninty fanboys just wont buy my game unless its got mario and how the hell do i release a verison of my game far inferior to the other consoel versions and expect it to sale.  Nintys weak hardware is making me doubt a Nin consoel release is vialble.  So a choice of releaseing a inferior version to a fanbase that hates everyhting not Ninty, or just forget it and focus on Ps/X versions.  The thought of Mario will steal my sales does not even cross my mind.

I say though that the 3DS is not a failure. I understand that it was a failure on the first years but so far so good. The 3DS is doing great numbers even if it's never going to catch the DS. And frankly I think no other handheld will ever reach the same height.

I agree that the philosophy was wrong when they concieved the system but I don't think that they can't fix the problem. I think they need a new IP like the DS had. The DS had Brain Age and Nintendogs, and those two sold a lot! I think the 3DS can get back the DS crowd, they need a new IP like the DS had.

I agree though with the Wii U thing. I didn't know what to think about the system at E3. I liked the idea of the gamepad but I didn't buy it because of it. I bought it because of my inner Nintendo fangirl, and I even got it a year late. That's the problem though, only Nintendo gamers seem to be interested in it. The problem is... what if Nintendo doesn't come up with another Wii? Suppose the Wii U sells even less than the Gamecube? What will happen with the next system then? That would certainly be very troubling...

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

 Yep, Yep & Yep. Agreed.
