Software is software and the genre is less important. People only have limited $$ to spend. If a Mario Kart and GTA launch on same day... MK wins GTA sells less. Completely different genres but MK will win in those who would want both games. (proven when GTA4 was outsold by MKWii even though GTA had a combined larger userbase offered on)
Same as movies. A Pixar cartoon releases and it will destroy a horror fest or action movie. Simply because the mass consumers will only choose one experience at that time.
There is a reason Nintendo sells more software than EA who technically releases more content each year. Nintendo IPs simply hold a better sway for average consumer.
MSony don't offer that same large competition in almost all genres as Nintendo does. Nintendo makes pretty much every genre except FPS and bloodfests sandbox/etc.
