Super Mario 3D world is on a system that is in a sales war with the Playstation Vita.

3D World was supposed to be the game that changed that. It didn't.

Wii U is selling way more than the Vita at the moment ...

Wii U just passed a "system sellerless" Vita's 2013 sales and only now during the holiday period where the intended demographic will be receiving a Wii U as a gift. What kind of kid in the West will go, hey mum and dad get me a Vita for Tearaway and Ys Celceta instead of a Wii U with 3 Mario games. If a game is supposed to save the system at this point it's going to be Mario Kart.

Yeah... the Wii U just passed the Vita and is outselling it on a consistent basis... After 3D World came out... that's kind of the point.

There were way more 3D World flop threads (outsold by Knack in the UK, Mario can't move consoles anymore, worst selling mainline Mario etc.) than GT6 flop threads...

Honestly, you're rarely ever going to find nearly as many negative Sony related threads, no matter the topic. Xbox, and especially Nintendo, for whatever fanboy reasons, seem to be troll magnet material far more than Sony ever is. Perhaps the majority of "vocal nerds" on the internet are angry Sony fanboys? Who knows.

Mario 3D world was less of a suprise though..people actually thought GT6 was gonna sell similar to GT5

Truly a remarkable achievement. Are you honestly trying to sugar coat the dire situation the Wii U is in? With the lineup the Wii U had in 2013 it should have doubled Vitas 2013 numbers.

Install base or not, the fact of the matter is Mario is MORE popular than Gran Turismo. The fact that GT6 is handily outselling it at 1.55 mil compared to 1.31 of 3D world just shows a double standard with the two games.

Did I miss something? Are people boasting about Mario 3D World's sales?

Wii U has a small userbase. PS3 doesn't have that issue.

Mario 3D Land has sold 9+ million units. That shows install base matters.

Technically, there's only 200k between the two titles. Given that Galaxy had about a 150 week head start on GT5, I think GT5 still has a shot at beating it out.

Yes but we are not talking about the future.

Trunkin's question implies that GT had always better sales than Mario 3D (so, if this new Mario manages to sell more than GT6, it will be a "winner") but that isn't true. Aside from the Game Cube / PS2 era, I think Mario 3D got always higher "skies" than GT games. I think Nintendo fans are getting nervous because of this GT6 vs Mario 3D World thread and they will take the eventually GT6's superiority in sales as a defeat. This may very well happen because WiiU is at risk of not getting a big userbase (end up like Game Cube or so) while PS3 has assured 80M potential clients for GT6 (good legs are almost guaranteed). In my opinion, there won't be a winner and a loser. The games are on different platforms and they will both sell well dispite their timid entry.

There's technically 3 generations.

According to VGChartz, the original Gran Turismo outsold Super Mario 64 and then Gran Turismo 2 came in 3rd. For the PS2, Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4 both outsold Super Mario Sunshine. This generation, it looks like it'll probably end up looking like Gran Turismo 5 > Super Mario Galaxy > Super Mario Galaxy 2 > Gran Turismo 6. For arguments sake, GT6 could overtake Galaxy 2 but I don't think it's necessarily guaranteed unless it's bundled/rereleased like Gran Turismo 5. As for SM3DW, it could possibly not sell as much as GT6 but at the same time, I think both titles can easily reach 6 million by the end of their runs. Neither one of them are necessarily going to be considered flops but neither one of them are going to be sales giants.

No, according to VGChartz Mario 64 (11,89M) outsold both GT1 (10,95M) and GT2 (9,49M). In 7th gen, Mario Galaxy 1 is still ahead of GT5 and I will not count Mario Galaxy 2 as I'm not considering GT5 Prologue either. Like I said, only the 6th gen was more favourable to GT than Mario 3D.

WTF am I reading here?

installbase doesnt mean anything? WTF

2300 games vs 130? WTF you can't use that worthless comparison...

one game have an 1.8% attach rate the other have 20-25% attach rate

Seriously? If, IF one of these games is a "flop" it sure as hell isn't the one with the bigger attach rate...

The damage control have really gotten out of hand on VGC these last couple of years...but this...this...

Install base means something, so does the number of competitors. Both factors are relevant...unlike attach rate, which is the real worthless analysis.

Want to see how worthless it is? COD Ghosts has an attach rate of 7,7% on PS3 and 8,9% on X360 while having 40,5% on PS4 and 43,2% on XOne. How does the SAME GAME manage to have around 5 times more attach rate on PS4 and XOne than in their predecessors?? I will give you a clue: competition. Now look at Assassin's Creed IV: 2,5% on PS3 - 2,3% on X360 - 30,5% on PS4 - 18,4% on XOne. Again, same game, very different values between tie ratios of 7th gen and 8th gen consoles. Lets go to the Sports genre, look at FIFA14: 5,6% on PS3 - 4,2% on X360 - 31,2% on PS4 - 23,5% on XOne.

Your logic seems to be full of holes. To be honest, I think there's no ground at all. It's just worthless. Even a poor game like Knack (12,4%) is able to get more attach rate than any platformer on PS3 (the best being LittleBigPlanet with 6,5%) or even than any 3D Mario on Wii (<11%).

If there is someone doing damage control it is surely not me

instal base is pretty irrelevant at this point of the generation.

the start of the 8 or the end of the 7th? cuz thats what compared here

end of 7th. Alot are brroken. Alot are sitting used at gamestops. A lot are collecting dust. Alot of people have/are upgrading to 8th gen. That 80m doesnt have the same buying power anymore (if it did then no one would have stopped supporting DS and ps2 and we would xpect all games to sell exceptionally well).

on the other hand the Wii Us install base is low but while it raises so will SW sales.

Well im yet to buy my copy of SM3DW, not because i don't want it but because i don't have the money to buy it yet, and im sure plenty of others are in the same boat.

only damage control i see is people talking about attach rate. You sell 20m console and 2 mil sw compared to 200m consoles and 10m sw I assure you the bigger flop is the one with the higher attach rate
