Forums - Sales - Double standard with Super Mario 3D World and GT6...

wait... what does Vita have to do with Mario or Gt?

It doesn't For some reason Nintendo fans always have to bring up the Vita when talking about sales.

If you had actually bothered to read the thread instead of just accusing people, you would see that someone brought up the fact that 3D world was suppose to make the Wii U outsell that Vita, since it didn't it was a bigger failure. Someone pointed that 3D world had done that, that's it.

Both of these games are far from flops and will likely both pass 5m lifetime.

Its very common for the second release of a game to sell less than the first on a particular console.

God of War > GoW2, GoW3 > Ascension, Mario Galaxy > Galaxy 2, Gran Turismo > GT2, GT3 > GT4, Zelda > Zelda 2, Ocarina of Time > Majoras Mask, Twilight Princess > Skyward Sword.

Also with GT6 releasing at the same time as PS4/One it makes sense why initial sales are low but the game will have legs and probably be the best selling PS3 game of 2014.

As for 3D World of course install base is a major reason for low sales, but it already has 25% attach rate and will continue to sell well for the entire lifespan of Wii U.

Another thing is that both of these games will likely be bundled at some point and will become $20 Greatest Hits/Nintendo Select titles down the road. I would be very surprised if these games dont pass 5m lifetime.

instal base is pretty irrelevant at this point of the generation.

the start of the 8 or the end of the 7th? cuz thats what compared here

end of 7th. Alot are brroken. Alot are sitting used at gamestops. A lot are collecting dust. Alot of people have/are upgrading to 8th gen. That 80m doesnt have the same buying power anymore (if it did then no one would have stopped supporting DS and ps2 and we would xpect all games to sell exceptionally well).

on the other hand the Wii Us install base is low but while it raises so will SW sales.

This has to be the worst argument I'd ever seen. If I didn't know you were actually serious, I'd think this was a troll post. Are you seriously trying to imply that there are so many PS3's that are broken and have been traded in that the userbase gap doesn't matter.  I'm going to have to quote Mark Twain.

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

wow.... way to totally only take one part of the argument way out of context.

WTF am I reading here?

installbase doesnt mean anything? WTF

2300 games vs 130? WTF you can't use that worthless comparison...

one game have an 1.8% attach rate the other have 20-25% attach rate

Seriously? If, IF one of these games is a "flop" it sure as hell isn't the one with the bigger attach rate...

The damage control have really gotten out of hand on VGC these last couple of years...but this...this...

Install base means something, so does the number of competitors. Both factors are relevant...unlike attach rate, which is the real worthless analysis.

Want to see how worthless it is? COD Ghosts has an attach rate of 7,7% on PS3 and 8,9% on X360 while having 40,5% on PS4 and 43,2% on XOne. How does the SAME GAME manage to have around 5 times more attach rate on PS4 and XOne than in their predecessors?? I will give you a clue: competition. Now look at Assassin's Creed IV: 2,5% on PS3 - 2,3% on X360 - 30,5% on PS4 - 18,4% on XOne. Again, same game, very different values between tie ratios of 7th gen and 8th gen consoles. Lets go to the Sports genre, look at FIFA14: 5,6% on PS3 - 4,2% on X360 - 31,2% on PS4 - 23,5% on XOne.

Your logic seems to be full of holes. To be honest, I think there's no ground at all. It's just worthless. Even a poor game like Knack (12,4%) is able to get more attach rate than any platformer on PS3 (the best being LittleBigPlanet with 6,5%) or even than any 3D Mario on Wii (<11%).

If there is someone doing damage control it is surely not me

the reason is simple.  i bought an xbox one when it came out...i wanted games to play because of the money i paid for the system so i bought games i wouldnt have purchased normally.

Mario 3d world doesn't fit that category for me because i purchased my wii u a year ago (when i bought the wii u i did the same thing by the way).  For someone who just bought a wii u though i would imagine they would buy mario 3d world for at least partly the same reason...or they would get a wii u for the game to begin with :)

Both have things going against them. GT6 was released around the same time as the PS4 and Xbox One came out. The release being after the PS3 has been on the market for 7+ years, so many people were ready to move on. Mario, on the other hand, is launching on a console that has only sold 5M in 1+ years. Unfortunately for Nintendo, it doesn't look like even Mario is enough to completely overcome the disinterest in the Wii U HW. In the end, they will both do decent numbers. Just not as well as the previous games in the series.

If it had been a main series Mario title, and not a side-series game, I think there would be MUCH more interest in the game. From what I gather about Mario 3D World, it looks to be a rushed game that may have originally been a 3DS project.

mario 3d world was anything but rushed.  The game looks amazing and has a lot of replayability.  I would go as far as saying i prefer it over the 3ds mario 3d land.

No, according to VGChartz Mario 64 (11,89M) outsold both GT1 (10,95M) and GT2 (9,49M). In 7th gen, Mario Galaxy 1 is still ahead of GT5 and I will not count Mario Galaxy 2 as I'm not considering GT5 Prologue either. Like I said, only the 6th gen was more favourable to GT than Mario 3D.

okay. So SM3DW is reigning champion for 8th generation for now since the other has yet to be released. Cool, coolcool.

GT6 was already released. What are you talking about?

I guess its a matter of perspective if where I disagree with you because I feel that next gen games count if they're from the next gen consoles.

Yes, it's a matter of perspective. Honestly, I find GT6 to be more next-gen than Mario 3D World. The latter is a return to the past while the former is a consolidation of its predecessor (GT5). Moreover, GT6 has higher tech than M3DW (graphics, etc.) and I don't even think that any WiiU game will be able to surpass GT6's graphics. WiiU for me is 7th gen (and I know it's a personal opinion).

Nevertheless, this thread is putting GT6 vs M3DW and people are coming here to comment over that perspective, so I guess it's not a shock for you to consider that comparison too.

That supports what I've been saying. It's about competition on a certain platform, which makes the tie ration analysis worthless in this case. The low competition on XOne made you to buy games you wouldn't buy if you had more options. The high competition on PS3 makes GT6 to be only bought by who really wants that game. The WiiU is in between these two scenarios. The fact that it doesn't fit into the XOne's category doesn't mean it's equal to the PS3.

Week after week, Mario 3D World seems unable to catch GT6. A game considered a flop has the same legs as the WiiU's protagonist.

You do not compare Nintendo games and sales to those of Xbox and PS. Nintendo always seems to be the exception to all established rules.

You do not compare a IP of a successful veteran console to new generation console....and one that isn't selling well.

GT6 is a flop "compared to the sales of GT5". This isn't rocket science. Most people understand this concept. Alone it is successful. Compared to its predessors, it flopped. Get over it.
