Not a chance, the PS4 will outsell it within it's first year.

With what games?  Wii U will have DK, Mario Kart, Smash Bros,  most likely Animal Crossing and Pokemon  which  will sell in very well in Japan. Metal Gear Solid? No MGS game has even reached 1 million in Japan. Final Fantasy? God knows when XV will come out. Yakuza? Same thing I said about MGS applies to Yakuza. PS4's only hope is a Dragon Quest game.. That's it.

There isn't an animal crossing nor pokemon game confirmed, and donkey kong isn't a system seller in japan, yakuza on ps4 despite being on the PS3 will sell much more, and smash bros is on the 3DS, so it's effect will not be that much, and mario kart doesn't even have an exact release date, and if were comparing games with no release date, then final fantasy and kingdom hearts will destroy it

The Wii U will practically miss every big japanese game, i think it's pretty much impossible for the wii u to win japan.

        DK is not a system seller? Returns sold 1 million in  Japan.. Something Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 6 ,  PES 2013, Yakuza 5, Tales of Xillia among others games failed to do.. Mario Kart 8 can easily  pass 2 million in Japan if it gets bundled.. Heck, Wii party U is already at 530k in just a couple of months... Smash Bros 3DS won't affect Wii U sales that much.. It won't... Smash  Bros is known for being a local multiplayer experience and the 3DS cannot offer that...
        Regarding Pokemon and Animal Crossing...  There is that rumored game Pokken Fighters game for the Wii U..... That may be  Pokemon Wii U.. As far as Animal Crossing  goes, Nintendo stated that they are deciding  which platform will get the next Animal Crossing game.. Nintendo would have to  be really dumb to put it on the 3DS, so it's most likely a Wii U game.

Kingdom Hearts II at 1.12 million. Yakuza 2 at 0.84 million. Tales of Destiny at 0.83 million. Dynasty Warriors 4 at 1.13 million. Idolm@ster SP at 0.23 million. Pro Evo Soccer 6 at 1.16 million. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker at 0.96 million. Resident Evil 2 at 2.02 million. Best Level 5 game not on Nintendo console is Danball Senki at 0.39 million (perhaps you meant someone other than Level 5? Level 5 rarely releases anything on a platform that isn't Nintendo). Best Falcom game is Ao no Kiseki at 0.20 million.

In total, that's 12.51 million. To put this into perspective, Pokemon's best is at 10.22 million on its own. Mario's best is at 6.81 million (or 6.49 million if you don't want to count NES era as being too far back in time). Animal Crossing's best is at 5.33 million. Dragon Quest IX sold 4.35 million, and DQ seems to be locked to Nintendo at the moment. Mario Kart's best is at 4.12 million. Wii Sports is at 3.77 million. These are all higher than the top series you've noted, Final Fantasy.

You assert that Donkey Kong isn't a system seller in Japan. Did you bother to look into it? Donkey Kong Country sold 3.00 million copies in Japan. Even Donkey Kong Country Returns sold 1.03 million, which places it ahead of more than half of the franchises on your list.

Yeah, let's just forget that New Super Mario Bros U is behind New Super Mario Bros Wii , Or Pikmin 3 is selling worse then 2 or 1, or mario 3d world, being the worst selling 3d mario game to date.

And i'm not comparing the best of each franchise, i'm talking about now, no mario game will sell 6 million in japan, and we all know pokemon only sells on handhelds and as does animal crossing, and dragon quest is also on handhelds, so that completely destroys half of your figures right there, not to mention wii sports was bunlded, and it was actual sales.

Final Fantasy on PS3 only sold 1.87 million, as compared to 3.63 million for the best-selling Final Fantasy, which was on the original PS. And the best on PS2, Final Fantasy X, sold 2.73 million. So the series appears to be in decline in Japan.

And yes, NSMB U is behind NSMB Wii in total lifetime sales in Japan. This should surprise nobody, given that NSMB Wii was released when the install base in Japan was at about 9 million, while NSMB U was a launch title, plus the fact that NSMB Wii has been out since 2009. Meanwhile, NSMB U is well on its way to beating Final Fantasy XIII, and continues to sell. And that's despite the Wii U having an install base of 1.5 million compared with the 9.7 million of the PS3.

You want a more modern comparison? How about this one...

On PS3, Final Fantasy's best sold 1.87 million. Kingdom Hearts' best sold 0.24 million. Yakuza's best sold 0.63 million. Tales' best sold 0.67 million. Dynasty Warriors' best sold 0.46 million. Idolm@ster's best sold 0.16 million. Pro Evo's best sold 0.55 million. Metal Gear's best sold 0.83 million. Resident Evil's best sold 1.08 million. Level 5's only PS3 game sold 0.21 million. Falcom's best game sold 0.04 million.

Total? 6.74 million.

On Wii, NSMB Wii alone sold 4.68 million. Wii Sports sold 3.77 million, Mario Kart Wii sold 3.7 million, Wii Fit sold 3.6 million, Brawl sold 2.55 million, and Wii Party sold 2.48 million. The only ones from this list that are properly out at this point are NSMB U and Wii Party U. NSMB U is about to hit 1 million. Wii Party U hit 500,000 in less than 9 weeks.

Meanwhile, Wii U has Dragon Quest and it has Monster Hunter - two franchises which are bigger than Final Fantasy in Japan. And if Nintendo were even remotely concerned about Wii U sales in Japan, they'd simply have to bring out a Pokemon game - or are you going to assert that Pokemon doesn't sell well in Japan anymore?

EDIT: Oh, by the way... "Pokemon and Animal Crossing only sell well on handhelds"? Animal Crossing: City Folk sold 1.32 million, which puts it ahead of all bar ONE PS3 game. Pokemon Stadium 2 sold 1.13 million on N64, which is also ahead of all bar one PS3 game. Pokemon Colosseum sold 0.7 million on Gamecube, and that's better than all bar two of the franchises you mentioned, with regards to PS3. And none of these were REAL pokemon games - Colosseum was the closest, but it was a spinoff title, with no wild pokemon (among other issues). What happens if they release Pokemon Z on the Wii U?

@ Aielyn: do you think there is a real possibility to see a pokemon game on the U (other than Rumble)? It could take advantages from offscreen play, I guess.

I do think it's a possibility, especially given how Wii U sales have gone so far. Notice that the only time so far that Pokemon RPGs were released on a home console in the past were on the Gamecube, about two years after launch? I don't think it's coincidence - I think Pokemon is one of the franchises that they will only make on console when the system is struggling.

Off-screen play is one benefit, but a bigger one is the online capabilities. They don't have to go full MMO to make it a huge-seller, in my opinion - simply having MMO-like elements would probably be OK; quests (cooperative) and battle facilities (competitive) with a wide variety of rules and features would work well.

With the latest results, maybe it's time to relieve this thread.
