Once cloud gaming comes in 2-3 years it's over. No joke.

I know the back up ARM processor in the PS4 coupled with Gaikai will make life hard for MS...

last gen didnt do so well if u exclude the non gamers who bought a wii.
how many wii owner bought more then 5 games? 20m? 30m? sony did realy bad, they lost half of the ps2 sales to ms. and i dont see this gen coming close to lastgens sales. the graphics will look dated in 2 years when ps360 is out of the picture.

No we are not.  My parents have a wii that hasn't been turned on for years.  They use their PS3 multiple times a week forr Netflix, Singstar (Big exclusive people always forget), and Blue Ray.  My parents are the farthest thing from hardcore gamers you can imagine.  Once the hype wore off, they chose to use the console that isn't a one trick pony.

Also the "Families" I know of use tablets instead of a Wii.  So yeah the tablet market killing Nintendo is no joke...  My neice litterally just got the new Kindle Fire and stopped using her 3DS.

First of all, the Wii has netflix, her kindle fire probably has netflix, nowadays everything has netflix. And signstar is one among a truckload of karaoke games, some easily found on Wii. The reasons they are using the PS3 is not for games, and so it validates my  point. The Wii and WiiU are simply not offering them what the Wii initially did.

And also the fact that you prefer the PS3 makes their choice of where they watch netflix more easy, keep 1 console under the tv it's easier.

1) The Wii's Netflix is horibly slow and laggy.

2) Singstar is THE best kareoke game.  I have seen others, and I understand why Sony dominates this niche market.

3) They also use the PS3 for Buzz Quiz, video chatting, and Home.  Things the Wii ALSO doesn't have.

The Wii offered a new gimic that allowed non gamers to play games.  Touch screens have taken over now and can entertain the kids just as well.  You asked what we thought, and that is what I think.  You can say "It isn't true," but the fact is the sales of the Wii U show that whatever people wanted from the Wii, it isn't in the Wii U.

If you get out of the Wii U what you got out of the Wii.  Then Kudoes!  But there are not many of you...

It's honestly fine. I mean I don't think people are as loyal as some people think. People went to PS2 because it was the best option, then they went to 360 (At first) because it was the best, and now they will go back to PS4...

The PS2 expanded the marketshare of the entire industry . it also allowed you to do do everything and anything. It gave you casual, core and had something for everyone. I agree with this and it created a more loyal marketshare and expanded it to tech people. Nintendo found a market that will game with you for a little in a simplistic manner but will leave until you come up with another gimmick that can keep them busy for a short span of time. A very trendy bunch and its really hurting Nintendo right now.

Fair enough.

What I said about the U is that I'm not getting out of it what I got on the Wii, and many other consumers feel that way it seems, if their wallets speak anything. So it looks like we agree. My opinion is ultimately that Nintendo is capable of recapturing sales from that audience by offering a better service (games and product).

Nintendo can try. The opportunity is there, but at this point its going to have to be something new and MS used Sonys concept to win over a share of the Wii crowd with the Kinect. 40 million motion control/camera units sold between the PS3 and the Xbox 360. The fad rubs off especially when you dumb it down further. Sony sold less because they dumbed it down less and made it more intuitive than the counterparts requiring full  body movement and proper tracking coupled with a small amount of content and shitty marketing. Microsoft has to have sold about thirty million units off the back of the Wii with the Kinect. When the Wii's numbers started dwindling the Kinects starting to rise. I sensed a correlation in 2010. Did you?

I did. And 2011 later coincides with Nintendo's dwindling support on the Wii. It's hard to tell if people were getting sick of Nintendo or if Nintendo just dropped the ball. A mix of both maybe?

If Nintendo provides content (which they were) people shouldnt have run off in general (but they did). My conclusion is that casual trends change. They are always looking for the next big commercial trend to spend their money on and then move. Wii Fit and the streaming services had the highest online utility for a casual or non-gamer. Chances are that a non-gamer wasnt going to use the Wii for multimedia anyway. The PS3 had the highest netflix usage out of any other console. Xbox Live definitely hurt Microsofts chances to be at the top spot for sure. When it comes to casual content Nintendo ended it with Wii Fit. Wii Sports was bundled with the Wii so it sold nearly the whole share of what the Wii sold in general. Wii Sports resort most likely didnt come bundled because it sold close to a third and the WIi Fit games sold even less. Third parties made bank on the dance and casual fitness games. Very cheaply made games that commanded a ton of profit. In conclusion yeah, its a little bit of both. They have short attention spans but Nintendo on the first and third party angle had more than enough content for casuals. Problem is they could've tried something new past 2010. They didn't. Casuals have a short attention span so I believe the Kinect came at the perfect time.

Honestly, like honestly, Nintendo really didn't provide satisfactory content at the proper price post 2010. If they did, they would have seen a 3DS rebound. They really need to fix their WiiU offering to get consumers back. I agree that it's a bit of both, but Nintendo can really do a lot to fix this and they are struggling right now honestly. Compared to the Wii 2006-2009, they aren't performing well in their product offerings for the U.

Thats assuming that the non-gamers had more than a passing interest in gaming after the Wii. I assure you the majority did not. The Wii U was a huge success though. The Wii had content like Just Dance, Wii Party, Zumba Fitness and more up through 2009 and then the third party casual titles started coming in. If you notice the Wii's highest selling games sold like clockwork during a three year span (just enough for the majority of the casual attention to rise and fall). Mario was the main attraction for a core game that they would even dare purchase and metroid wasnt even an option. It was mostly games with Mario in it and passing casual party games that sold. Again, when you dont have a core audience or even a moderate gaming crowd the fanfare dies rather quickly. They were meant to go away eventually. All Nintendo can do is hope they reacquaint themselves with them later on in the future.

Nintendos core market will buy Wii U's in due time. Problem is after the third parties left that stable market is around 20-30 million Lifetime.

If the 3rd parties didn't abandon the DS/3DS, why would they abandon the WiiU? Even if the usual 3rd party games don't appear on the U, it doesn't really matter, as those didn't appear on the DS line anyways.

20-30 million is cube numbers. Without the games on the HD twins, Nintendo was able to sell more than 150m DS' and countless software, what makes it so different for the U?

That's why I don't see value in the numbers you bring to the table.

the DS is a portable and the WIi U is a home console, there is overlap but they are not really the same market. Thats the big difference. DS is the PS2 of the portable gaming market. As for 3rd parties, well for one not as much as them even mess with the DS and 3ds as you might think at least not the western ones which ironically they mostly dev for home consoles and PC machines. Even at the height of DS popularity. Plus i imagine its much cheaper to make a game for DS/3ds than it is a home console. Especially a home console that has a crap install base compared to much bigger ones of the portables, so they would absolutely abandon Wii U quicker than they would 3ds. games that are popular on home consoles arent usually popular on portables, FPS comes to mind so people arent expecting those on portables anyway, but when they dont appear on a actual home console you have a problem as we can see.

I just dont think the DS and Wii U is a good comparison. 3rd parties have abandoned it, EA straight up said they are not doing anything for WIi U. No matter what you feel about them, they are one of the big ones. Acti will keep putting ports on the system. Ubi seems to be the only one that cares. I dont think SE has anything in the pipe for WIi U, Capcom either. Did you see last E3? out of all the new game announcements for next year besides Watchdogs i dont think any of them are hitting WIi U. Hell there missing alot of PS360

Both.  You know people may think Patcher is a joke, but he was right about launching Wii HD in 2011.  It sould have put that tablet money into making it 4x as strong as this gen for $350 (That extra $100 really would have been that big a difference fyi).  There was some goodwill left from even the casual back then...

Hi folks, I saw this posted by someone on a user's wall and I was wondering if you agree with this point of view:

Our market will shrink this gen and be completely controlled by Sony and Microsoft with Nintendo picking up the table scraps (as they did two gens before that). Because Nintendo created a fad and attracted people who have no true interest in gaming and just saw it as a passing Christmas gift that they could just enjoy and throw away. Its the reason why generation after generation Sony sells 80 million+ and higher. Microsoft figured out how to have a stable fan base like Sony and they have over 80 million in sales now. They basically have half of the PS2 real estate. The Wii U is not completely the problem with the tablet...its that the market Nintendo created from the very beginning did not care about gaming enough to truly invest in future iterations. They are apart of the casual market. Look at the sales of consoles before the Wii and await the sales of consoles after. Nintendo went after a disloyal community of people who more often than not wont be coming back. They only respond to trends like the plague because of price and marketing. The Wii U is not the case because it doesn't make gaming simple for non-gamers to just enjoy and move on with their lives. The Kinect did that hence why it gained twenty million in sales off the back of the Wii. Microsoft knows the Kinect wont sell amazingly by itself because that casual ship has sailed, so they bundled the Kinect 2 with the Xbox One to make a profit regardless of whether it needed it or not.

If not, what is flawed about it?

I'm interested in your responses.

No.  The Wii had a typical video game system sales life, very much like PS1.  Almost identical, really.  The so called "non-gamers" who loved Wii is greatly exhaturated.  Wii was loved by the mass market.  The same people who loved the novelty of Guitar Hero or GTA on PS2 flocked to Wii to try out Wii Sports.

The problem Nintendo is facing is that gen 7 was very long and was almost 2 gens in one.  Consumers picked up a Wii to play when it was new and used it on their SDTVs.  When HDTVs were rapidly adopted, PS3 and XB360 offered a new experience to consumers with HD visuals and great 3rd party content not available on Wii.  In particular, COD became the new mass market fad with Moder Warfare and so many consumers upgraded to PS360 as they became cheaper.

Going forward, neither Sony, MS or Nintendo have a "stable" or massively loyal user based.  Each has dedicated fans, but the mass market buys whatever is interesting and trendy.  Right now, none of the gen 8 systems have really captured imagination.  Nintendo is facing on uphill battle because many in the mass market are associating Wii with something passe and low-tech.  They have also developed online communities on PS or XBOXLive.  That said, the market is ready to be won by any company offering something that can get the mass market attention.  Right now I actually think it is MS in the worst place, simply because of the high price of One.

It is not the Wii audience that is disloyal.  The mass market is disloyal.  They jump from Nintendo to Playstation, back to Nintendo, over to XBox and right now they will go to something exciting.
