Forums - Microsoft - Turn 10 Admits "Night Racing and Weather is Not a Minor Thing to Add"

“To build a new track that would work at night and in wet would mean a bespoke track."

The cheapest track Turn 10 built for Forza Motorsport 5 took nine months. It was an updated version of an older track, with heavy modifications to bring it up to the team's next generation standards.

"Everything had to be rebuilt," Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt told IGN.

Courses the developer built from scratch with entirely new assets -- whether for the sake of looking better or achieving better accuracy -- took considerably longer. This is why we haven't seen nighttime racing or weather effects in Forza 5. It's why we may not get to for a while, if ever.

Adding night and weather to an existing course "is not a minor thing, it is not a 'add a little bit of time, throw it in' thing," Greenawalt said. "When we do things, we do it all the way. That means physics, that means changing conditions, that means everything. So that is not the sort of thing that is easily undertaken in a patch.”

So, what about building a new course around rain and darkness? Greenawalt explains, “To build a new track that would work at night and in wet would mean a bespoke track. Everything we build is bespoke."

To start from the bottom up means at least another nine months of development -- that's just to get the course up and running, never mind modifying it with new water and car physics, and new lighting.

"If we wanted to make one of those tracks work with the added particles or projected shadows, and of course adding the physics to do something like night and wet, it means re-engaging those tracks. I’m not trying to give an excuse, I’m trying to give context as to why this is an order of magnitude higher than something like Drag and Tag, and other things we’re looking at from the community.”

Greenawalt explained that "it’s fair that people ask for the features they want, and we’re here to make fans happy." He knows that both night racing and weather are staples of the genre. "It’s not where we chose to put our investment in Forza Motorsport 5. We chose to be 1080p and 60 frames per-second, and have that solid performance.”

To that end, "we’re going to try to make the best decisions we can to get people to really, really love the game.” Those who don't may find their feedback considered for future updates to Forza 5, as always.

This, while last gen racers had night and weather years ago.

I can't take Forza seriously anymore without such basic things, and now this, claiming that it's too complex to do. As if no one else has these features?

But it is minor enough to leave out and claim difinitiveness

damn it's hard, that too

back to OP, yeah it's incomplete, damn we need Forza 6 already, the definitive definitiveness

Hmm, so were Cities and Towns in the PS3/360 era.

It is definitely not easy but it can be done and in the next installment it will definitely be there.

Wont even bother saying a game that have all this, have graphics almost as good even on inferior HW bit even so have worst score because of luggage... Reviewer sucks, and FM6 will be the complete FM5 as Gt6 is for Gt5. And ti who say about heritage now both franchise have the same number of main outputs and console gens.

There is an excuse each time a new Forza releases for why they could not add something as simple as night racing.

This time the excuse is because it would need to be added in from the onset of development for these tracks. Then they say they rebuilt these tracks from scratch.

So if your fans have been complaining for so long, why didn't you just factor it in from the start since you had to rebuild the tracks from scratch?

So considering they are remaking nurburgring right now should fans now expect it to come with night racing or should they not expect it and then for Forza 6 not expect it too since they would need to rebuild it all over again?

My bet, you see a Night Racing DLC.

It certainly should be there in the next iteration. Plenty of racers have it, so just say fuck the 2 years development cycle and take an additional year and give us these features.
While I'm not really sick of Forza, there have been so many of them in the short past that Forza 5 doesn't give me a reason to buy an Xbox One anytime soon.

i dont really blame turn 10. they only have 2 years to make a game. if MS acted like sony does with PP and gave Turn 10 more time than just 2 years to build the game then they would have more time and could possibly add these effects.

Understood, but they could have given the fans these features if they weren't so busy worrying about Top Gear and making your car look even prettier in Vista mode.

I am sure driving fans would like night time racing long before enhanced vista mode. It just seems as though they don't find any of the features the fans are asking for to be near the top of their priority list. They say they feel disconnected from their fanbase, yet the answer as to why is staring them right in the face. Night racing has been an asked for feature forever. Heck, it was in Forza 1.

Now, if it MS telling them they don't find it to be worth the effort and tells them to focus on things like Vista mode and such, then I feel bad for T-10.
