I'm all for the next Zelda having a lot more fine detail and things like realistic lighting. But I don't want it to have "realistic visuals". The realm of Hyrule is meant to be colourful, vibrant, and a little bit cartoony. Twilight Princess pushed just a little too far into "realistic", in my opinion, and it resulted in a game that was a little too dark and gritty for Zelda (although the game itself was top-notch - it just would have been better with the more vibrant Skyward Sword style in terms of visuals).
That being said, I'm all for Nintendo creating a new IP with a more realistic feel. Something that sits somewhere between Zelda: Twilight Princess, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Xenoblade, and the Metroid series in terms of design would be perfect, I think. Perhaps taking some cues from GTA design as well - not so much the theme (crime), but more the game design itself. Perhaps a third person shooter that is a little less "adventure" (compared with Metroid), but with the expanding accessibility of the GTA and Metroid games, a storyline more like Zelda in overall feel with Disaster type theming ("real" world villains) and a sense of scale similar to Xenoblade. Gritty but not too dark, with real colours rather than brown and grey.
i didn' see an example of "realistic" in the posts so far, but if you literally mean trying for photo-realism i couldn't disagree more. The worst thing a great game can do is try to look like real life. It always looks awesome when it comes out, but then in 5 years it just looks awful and dated. OOT (3ds), skyward sword, twilight princess, even the new lbw all have distinct art styles, but i wouldn't call any of them (or any nintendo game for that matter) realistic. The tech demo looked fantastic, but i wouldn't say it looked realistic (as in photo realistic). If you just mean darker or gothic like tp, then yeah, i'd be down. Otherwise, nooooooo. No to zelda or any other game worth playing.

Zelda Wii U should not look like this:

BUT
it should look like this:

I disagree that it has to be realistic, I feel Zelda comes across better when it is heavily stylized like WW and SWS plus the art direction doesn't age as fast with this approach. Believe me Zelda even with a more realistic approach will not end people's perceptions on power no matter how good it looks, I'd much prefer a stylized approach as the games comes across much better and art direction benefits more, leave the realistic approach to Metroid or X.
WW was remade because the stylized approach has become more appreciated and people now understand why they used it.
I think that the tech demo shown a few years back is a great model for what the graphics of the new game should be. They were highly detailed, looked stunning in both the night and day mode, and really felt immersing despite it only being a video.
Personally, graphics don't make a game but for Zelda's sake, it can be seen that it makes a difference. If this game keeps the graphics of the tech demo, Nintendo uses the couple years it has had since showing it to update it, and gives the game a color pallet (tp being the last realistic game which had no color), then Nintendo should be fine.
| Nem said: For me the explanation why it needs is simple. Every gen Nintendo hypes zelda by making a realistic demo. Then they proceed to let the fans down and deliver something completely different. They have to realise they cant do that. If you promise, you need to deliver. |
in wich reality?

People don't want blood in a Zelda game, something that has a more haunting/interesting/twisted storyline is probably one thing, an orchestral soundtrack is probably point 2, better game play pacing overall, less hand holding, and a non-cartoony art style I would say are the main points that people probably want. Possibly more action/better combat too. It's time for voice acting too, even if the characters speak Hylian. There's also a very real chance that if the Wii U keeps going the way it is, Zelda U could be the lowest selling console installment in the franchise -- if it's an overly cartoony/childish design style, in fact I'd virtually say it's a lock to reach a new low in the series. |
in this reality we live, gamers care about gameplay.

if anything, the zelda demo is not realistic ;)

We probably have a different perception of what realistic looking is. You know exactly what i mean from my post though, so lets not engage on semantics wars, i dont have the patience for it.
