Forums - Gaming - How long will 720P be sufficient for console gaming?

How long is 720P good for?

Last gen (PS360) 69 42.33%

This gen (PS4/XBO/U) 71 43.56%

Next Gen (PS5, XBO2, U2) 23 14.11%

Total:163

I think there will be a number of 720P games this gen. Why? Cause isn't not that great a deal. It's more important that your screen be a higher rez, than the game. Plus, designers don't want tiny people and can't assume everyone has a 6 foot or 2 meter screen.

Looking at 480p on a 1080p isn't so good, well, unless you have a great upscaler with 8 level anti aliasing. It will be fuzzier than a true 1080p signal but usable.

Unless your eye can recognize each dot, then a 720p and a 1080p signal isn't dramatic. Sure I want everything run at 4K at 120 fps, but tech for the masses isn't affordable yet. The screen should be a high rez as you can get. Someday we will stop talking about resolution and talk about the DPI of the screen - as that has much to do with how you perceive the image.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Until there's another huge leap in standard resolution, I think 720p will be fine for gaming. I doubt 4K will be as quickly adopted as 1080p, as the benefits are only drastically noticeable when you're dealing with very large TVs.

(I also realize that there are people that can tell the difference between 1080p & 4K on smaller panels, but not everyone is a techie and won't be willing to shell out thousands for the latest display tech)

Forever, the human eye can´t see any diference beyond 720p, 24FPS and 256 colors. Video game technology has been maxed out already its a fact.

Lies... I have human eyes, and I can tell the difference between a 720p 24FPS and 1080p 60FPS... it's actually a noticeable difference if you have them side by side... luckily me and my brother have pretty much the same computers spec wise, so we can test this out, and the difference is definitely there, and easy to spot :)

It was a joke post.

As long as people having hard time and neat picking to find any difference. As longe as the upscale is good, AA and effects are well managed.

I´m starting to belive if IW wasn´t forced to speak out the "native" rendering resolution for PS4 and One, people would never have noteced (unless pixel counting).

The Resolutiongate and the Doritocracy were for nothing. Again, if people can´t tell the difference in IQ look side by side still zoomed frames to be honnest, there is no IQ difference.

For everyone thinking 4K is uber expensive, it's not.

$700 for a 39 inch 4K TV
$1,100 for a 50 inch 4K TV.

In a couple of years 4K will completely replace 1080P as the standard as the price of the panels fall.

1080P will be the new 720P
4K will be the new 1080P in give or take, 2 to 3 years.

Until your average TV is 50" or bigger.

From what I have observed, you would be the exception. I can easily see the difference too, but I'm a bit of a graphics whore. Most people don't seem to notice a huge difference until they're sitting 3 metres from a 50-80" TV. Then it starts to be like 480p vs 720p all over again.

Agreed, also if you have to sit very close to your smaller TV you will notice some difference. Maybe in US and Europe, huge TVs are cheap, but here in LATAM is almost impossible for someone to have a TV bigger than 42", the TV I want to buy is 46" and it will cost me around 2.000 - 2.500 U$ and that is ultra expensive for my country and way too big for the average of my friends (32" - 40").

I think this generation (Wii U/X1/PS4) in 720p will be just fine.

Some folks were boasting how a game that ran at 720p was the best they've ever seen, now they want to spit on that resolution.

You are missing the point. The point is a console purported to be as powerful as its competitor is no where near achieving parity in performance.
