Forums - Gaming - How long will 720P be sufficient for console gaming?

How long is 720P good for?

Last gen (PS360) 69 42.33%

This gen (PS4/XBO/U) 71 43.56%

Next Gen (PS5, XBO2, U2) 23 14.11%

Total:163

1080p or bust. Yes I can tell the difference, I have a big tv. Im not debating it, bc I see it in front of me. I will settle for upscaling as well.

There not much difference between 1080p and 720p unless you using a gigantic TV. Nevertheless i prefer frame rate over resolution

I'm a PC gamer, I can easily tell the difference at a glance on my 24 inch monitor.

Intel core i7 930 OC @ 4.0 ghz

XFX Double dissipation Radeon HD 7950 356 bit 3gb GDDR5 OC @ 1150 MHz core + 1575 x 4 memory

Triple channel DDR 3 12gb RAM 1600 MHz

Apparently, I have super eyes. I can easily see the difference between 720P and 1080P on 32 inch TV from 2 meters away, let alone +42 inch.

Not for long, the difference is night and day:

considering I still watch TV at 480p on 55inch tv and it looks fine then 720p is good enough.

Seriously it is all about how you execute something on how well it will look.

Anyone with a 1080p PC monitor at home. Try to lower the resolution to 1280x720 and tell me you can't tell the difference... Tell me your eyes don't hurt. And don't tell me 1080p pc monitors are expensive, you can get one for 100 bucks.

I'm playing N64 games on my 42'' inch tv, still fun when I had played on a 24'' inch box tv on the 90's
Ps: still using my N64 it's not VC

We reap what we sow

It depends on monitor or TV size and viewing distance. 900p should already be fine on most TVs and monitors, but people with bigger ones will notice an improvement with 1080p. Also, 8th gen GPUs can improve quality in other ways besides resolution. We can expect to still have games @720p for the first two years, but with better effects than 7th gen and higher quality perceived, but surely, thanks to dev tools and drivers improvements and tweakings, later everything will be 900p or 1080p on both consoles. Obviously the most powerful one will be able to show some more in 1st party titles, if devs put enough efforts in it.

Do you understand that PC monitor and TV are different technologies? On a LCD monitor anything which is not native resolution looks bad. On the over side on modern Plazma TV, properly adjusted, from 3 meters you can hardly tell difference between 720p and 1080p.
If you're one of the guys who plays console games on the PC monitor - I feel sorry for you...
