Forums - Gaming - How long will 720P be sufficient for console gaming?

How long is 720P good for?

Last gen (PS360) 69 42.33%

This gen (PS4/XBO/U) 71 43.56%

Next Gen (PS5, XBO2, U2) 23 14.11%

Total:163

I'm done buying games that aren't 1080p. Letterbox games or something I can live with but nothing that isn't running at the native resolution of the TV. Even then that sucks but at least there is no upscaling. Anything that doesn't run at 1080p on consoles I'll get for PC or I'll just skip it.

Forever, the human eye can´t see any diference beyond 720p, 24FPS and 256 colors. Video game technology has been maxed out already its a fact.

then I must be superhuman.

Anyone with a 1080p PC monitor at home. Try to lower the resolution to 1280x720 and tell me you can't tell the difference... Tell me your eyes don't hurt. And don't tell me 1080p pc monitors are expensive, you can get one for 100 bucks.

Do you understand that PC monitor and TV are different technologies? On a LCD monitor anything which is not native resolution looks bad. On the over side on modern Plazma TV, properly adjusted, from 3 meters you can hardly tell difference between 720p and 1080p.
If you're one of the guys who plays console games on the PC monitor - I feel sorry for you...

I play on a 40' 1080p TV, 2.4 meters away from screen, with 5.1 surround sound. Your argument is invalid, TV pixels are no different from monitor pixels. Pixels are pixels. 720p on a 1080p screen is horrible.

Your adding of 5.1 surround sound in a resolution discussion shows you're a great expert in pixels!

I just wanted to make sure you don't feel sorry for me. My conscience couldn't bear it. :)

Because judging by this forum the past few days, people, shockingly, can't see the difference between 720P and 1080P, and games still look beautiful in 720P in their eyes.

Should the ability to distinguish between 720/1080 preclude you from seeing a beautiful game in 720?

720p will be sufficient for the vast majority of consumers for a long time. Why, you ask? The vast majority of those who bought a HDTV, bought HDready. IE: 720p resolution TV's. The same people care little to upgrade, as they're content with the IQ. All digital TV is also broadcast in 720p.

When doing some research on why people bought their HDTV, most said that it was because it looked better in the living room compared to their CRT.

My opinion on the whole 720p vs 1080p thing, since this is more or less what the thread is addressing, goes back to 2007. From the get go, I was playing on a 1080p display and liked the difference in sharpness and detail going from 720p to 1080p. It allowed to me to get a little closer without seeing aliasing.

Back in 2007, I was under the mistaken impression that eventually, 1080p native resolutions would be standard on 7th gen hardware and when that was looking like a pipe dream, barring some lower graphical overhead games that bothered to take advantage of 1080p native render because they had the extra memory resources available, I transitioned to PC gaming. I still prefer gaming on a console, I just don't like paying the same price for a blurrier, aliased picture.

4k gaming is not going to happen on 8th gen hardware. Maybe we'll see some lower overhead games that take advantage of the full resolution, for those who have 4k displays, but I'm not expecting to see games like Uncharted 4 or MGS5 in native 4k. I think that's another pipe dream.

So my opinion is that since I'm exclusively gaming on 1080p displays, that's really what I want to see out of my 8th gen hardware games. 1080p/60fps should be be a given.

Infinity.

Resolution doesn't matter much. As long as I can't see the difference from my couch between 720p and 1080p I don't care in the slightest.

Not for long, the difference is night and day:

At least Antonio is full-motion-video on the XBO. I'd rather have that.

Neither should your preference towards one company obstruct you from raising your standards higher and expect a beautiful game fully rendered in 1080p 60fps. That's what you expect from a dedicated next generation console that their PR claimed to be beta tested in the future.
