It won't if you don't have the belief!

Same people who keep saying "HL3 will never release". A pessimistic bunch, them.

The original came out in 1996.....

Eh...that's not quite 20 years yet! Think about Duke Nuken Forever, I suppose.

There's still hope. There's still hope...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

'At some point" can mean 2050 and beyond, you know!

Kid Icarus is 25 years in the making, LOL.

Today in Nintendo History:

Shantae was released for the Game Boy Color! (2002)

Sometimes, one of a gaming platform's greatest titles will come out well after its supposed sucessor. Kirby's Adventure came out over two years into the Super Famicom's life. Persona 4 came out on the PS2 two years after the PS3 was released. And in a slightly less extreme example, Shantae for the Game Boy Color came out on June 2, 2002, over a year after the Game Boy Advance was released in Japan. Sure, there was some GBA functionality, but this was ultimately a Color game rather than an Advance one.

And yet, Shantae became a cult classic, well-loved and respected despite it's late release.

It comes as a surprise to some people that Shantae's developer, Wayforward, actually dates back to 1990. Throughout the 90's they made a number of licensed games for the SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Sega CD, etc. Some of these games were traditional fare, while others were educational, based on Muppets and the like. Starting in the late 90's though, Wayforward shook itself up, and they decided to make an original IP. The result was Shantae, one of the last major Game Boy Color titles released. Since then, Wayforward has become a well-respected developer, making games like the Mighty series, a remake of the NES hit Duck Tales, and another Shantae game for DSiWare. There are currently two more Shantae games in development: Pirate's Curse for the 3DS and Half-Genie Hero for consoles.

Shantae didn't do much in the way of pushing the boundaries of gaming, essentially being a basic platforming-action game, but back in 2002, it was a great reminder that you could still make great games for older platforms. For this reminder, as well as being the de facto launch of Wayforward as a developer worth notice, it deserves to be remembered.

Other Notes:

  • The idea for Shantae goes back as far as 1994, when Erin Bell the basic idea of a character who used her hair to attack foes and had magical dances involving animals. Matt Bozon, her future husband, developed a mythos for the game from this idea.
  • Development of Shantae began as early as late 1996, possibly for the PC. This early version never got past the concept art phase, but introduced ideas such as magical attacks and offensive dances. Ultimately, the game got delayed to the Game Boy Color era, during which time it became a handheld game in order to require less resources.
  • Development of the game was finished long before launch. It just took ages to find a publisher (Capcom), which then delayed the game into mid-2002. THis was due to both the expense of Shantae's relatively high-tech cartridge and the risk of starting a new IP.
  • The soundtrack of the original Shantae was release for free online in August 2001, nearly a year before the game's actual release.

I'm not very inspired today.
