I don't think the PS3 will reach 100 million. At 80 million and the PS3 selling six million without the holidays, it means that after this year they still need to sell 20 million more. After next year, PS3 might be at 87 million, but I think sales will then drop to PSP levels. It's not going to continue selling 120,000 a week in 2015.

PS3 may have overtaken 360 this Q, certainly not before July, Sony would have said something. And if they don't say anything this Q then it hasn't either. Fact some people here think they wouldn't go without even mentioning in some capacity is crazy.

They were likely even as of late July (based on my calculations). So it's definitely likey PS3 has overtaken over the last couple of months, to what extent we'll find out soon. PS3 usually has an unusually high July - September period, about a million above 360. So the gap could be spot on!

16 months head start, they even used to say ps3 will do a dreamcast look at them now?

Microsoft was claiming that the Xbox 360 would get to 10 million units first on the market and that the first console to do so would make the rest obselete. Times HAVE changed!

Most likely it PS3 will continue to sell for a long time. At least in the US, I give it 2 to 3 more years on shelf as a cheaper option than the next gen consoles. In some countries where consumers are more price conscious expect the PS3 to be on shelves for at least 4 to 5 more years. If MS is smart they will follow the same plan and sell a lot more 360s, just not near as many as the PS3 will sell from hear on out.

China opening up to console game should be a huge market for both of these older consoles.

The Wii released a year later also. 

I think the console still has a major shelf life of a two or three more years, where I think it can manage a good 10-15 million. But there are many countries where it's still quite expensive, and I think a good price cut could stabilise its sales and help it in these other countries thereby still giving it a good 5 million a year for a few more years.

I really can see it doing 100 million just because i dont see price cutting happening that quick with the next gen for a couple of years, unless poor sales/desperation (from either MS or Sony) cuts in.

It's a pity we won't be tracking it. I'm also not too confident on our tracking in the more price consicous countries, which are a good point in favor of the PS3.

Congrats to Sony for finally getting second place. In all reality all three console makers did amazing this generation. Let's be honest, who would have thought Nintendo would be the leader by far this gen? Who thought that PS3 would take 7 years to get 2nd place? I recalled at the start of the gen everyone was making fun of Nintendo Wii and pretty well expected PS3 to be far and away the winner but the fact it was close between the HD twins forces both MS and Sony to step up their game.

The point still stands. I'm not talking about the expectations of console warriors on the Internets, just real sales numbers. If the PS3 had a horrible start compared to the PS2, then the Xbox 360 had an even more horrible start compared to the PS2.

And I wonder if Sony "wins" this gen if people will be saying it was because of what Sony did or if it will be the result of "MS screw ups".
