I am going with Sony, but I hope Nintendo and, to a lesser extent, MS survive this gen with good profits, no one wants to game in a world where only one company reigns supreme. MS is kind of a jerk and don´t play fair sometimes, I miss SEGA =/

OP: That's too bad, I would have hoped the 360 overtake the PS3 this gen. It also looks like this gap will only grow, because MS has mostly saturated the US, whereas Sony still has a lot of areas with more sales potential.

I no longer feel like the PS3 will get near 100mil however. 90-95mil most likely. Which is still incredible considering the beginning of the gen.

I really don't understand how you think it's possible for the PS3 to only do ~7 million for the rest of its life after the end of this year.

Yeah I think the consoles might be overtracked a little bit. I guess we have to wait on their quarterly reports which is within weeks for both.

@OP. The reason I wanted 360 to overtake PS3 is because MS really hit it off this gen, and the 2nd place was theirs for most of the gen, with Sony grabbing 2nd place right at the end.

It'll be interesting to see how the final numbers pan out, if the gap really widens or not, but in the end Sony's non-US markets really paid off for them this gen, and that's mostly the result of their marketting in the 2 gens prior to this one.

Effective marketing pays off.

Not surprising, people talk a lot about the "horrible start" the PS3 supposedly had, but it was always on pace to outsell the 360 if the gen lasted long enough (which it did).

Compared to its predecessor, it was a horrible start. Outpacing the 360 would have happened long ago, otherwsie. Just so happens that Sony screwed up enough to aid Microsoft's own efforts of keeping ahead.

Microsoft made their share of mistakes too with the 360. To be honest though, I'm thinking more and more that the 360 striving so much due to PS3's failures is an illusion. The steps MS made to become a legit contender this gen were successful, and the influence of Japanese 3rd parties was and has waned.

It might be a case of chicken and egg, but the more I look at it the more I feel the 360 made its success mostly on its own.
