Forums - Gaming - PS3 widening the gap with 360: gap is now 1 million

I wish i could find that old tread with some guy proving with detailed calculations why the PS3 will never catch up to the 360

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I don't find any of the companies GREEDY, that why I put the word in quotes.  They are simply trying to stay competitive and maximize profits while doing so.  CEO, etc. can be greedy with bonuses etc., corporations, with boards of directors, are run with numbers in mind at all times.  I'll try and tackle this piece by piece.

Why is Sony charging for internet with PS4?  Because they can and they realize that servers aren't free.  They are trying to make profit, just like they saw Microsoft doing.

Why is Microsoft offering free games with gold.  Because Sony does and they are trying to remain competitive.  Sony initially did it to ENTICE gamers TO their subscription program.  They knew that Microsoft had a better online setup early, so they had to offer other value to get people to sign up for paid online.  Again, they were trying to funnel customer into this paid service to maximize their profits.

Microsoft reversed the DRM policies due to Sony not having them, and people complaining like crazy about the Xbox One.   They did this to remain competitive.

WHY DOESN'T SONY EMBRACE SD CARDS??  Why do I have to buy THIER format, which is much more expensive.  Talk about nickel and diming.  There are other examples like this with Sony.  Used to sell their own projection technology, not DLP.  Pushed Bluray, not HD DVD. Etc.   Some work for them, others don't.  Again, trying to maximize their profit and get people locked in.  Actually, Blu ray is a big reason why Sony wasn't pushing DLC sooner.  DLC does not require a disc medium.

Are you really blaming DLC on Microsoft?  Seriously?  No one is forcing publishers to have DLC.

Finally, you can thank competition (from MIcrosoft, Sony, and Nintendo) for the market being where it is today.  Without the 360, the PS4 would not exist as you know it now... you very well might be looking at a $600 PS4, etc. as an example.

Look.  I encourage you to vote with your wallet.  Its what keeps companies "honest" so to speak.   Again, back to my point on competition.

Lets see... i agree with staying competitive. I dont agree with charging for the servers that microsoft had. They are dirty cheap. Sony doesnt embrace SD cards cause in case you missed it, hackers raped the hell out of the PSP towards irrelevancy. Yes, Microsoft is to blame for DLC practices because they bundled their system with a Hard drive first. This now allows for games to be released unfinished and grant us the joy of day 1 patches.

I also agree that Sony was arrogant and deserved the lesson they learned. The problem here is, i dont think Micorosft is capable of learning, they are too arrogant for that. We can tell by the sucessive mistakes they make with windows for example. We can tell that they will bring back the DRM further down the line of the X1 with most cetainty, but most of all the disdain with wich they treat customers with. Sony never went that far. They only took their sucess for granted, they didnt treat their customers like idiots.

Sounds like we agree on a lot of principles, and disagree on some details. Which is OK of course.

That being said, I do think that Microsoft is in the worst position going into November.  I have not been compelled yet that I need to buy an Xbox One over a Wii U or PS4.   The biggest plus for Microsoft right now is some of their exclusive games (Dead Rising 3, Ryse - if they only had Left 4 Dead 3, since the first one is what sold me on the Xbox 360).

Now if reports start coming out that early multiplats are better on the One, I might change my tune.  But until then, I will probably wait on the One until a year or more.

I will probably buy Wii U, PS4, and XOne in that order.

Even if the gap is 3m +, what difference will it make? 360 games sell more, attach rate of PS3 certainly hasn't gone up over the years.

Whatever... Sony won (over 360).

They truly deserve it.

Almost not true.  GTAV looks like it sold stellar on both platforms as an example.

Main reason I buy multiplats on my 360 is because the system generally seems cheaper to replace.  That and for games like COD, I have some friends on Xbox Live.  Not sure what they are planning to do next generation (a few of them love halo so they will probably get the Xbox One).

It seems like Sony has the most momentum (WW) going into next gen.  Where as Nintendo had the worst momentum (Wii lack of support).

Aye i'm about 3-4 months off with my prediction made in 2009 when the ps3 picked up steam.

I said that the ps3 wouldn't outsell the xbox untill the next generation, and i was wrong but barely

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

This actually depends on the game. Plenty of multiplats do better on PS3 these days. Heck, just look at GTA V vs GTA IV. While the 360 version sold more, so far, the ratio is much closer now then in 2008.

You know i got banned for this kind of logic.....

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The great EX-king of consoles, the playstation 2, goes from 150+ mil sold, to a little more than half at 79...while the Xbox went from 24 to 78 mil. Yet some people want to claim a Sony victory?

It amazes me how some people think. Fanboyism destroys rational thinking. Its obvious that the real winner was MICROSOFT, and big loser was SONY. Microsoft increased their market share more than 3x by robbing from Sony's PS2 crowd.

People need to be fair and call a spade a spade. Who cares if PS3 ends up even 5 mil ahead of 360, when they had a 130 mil lead the last gen?

Well Nintendo went from 21 Million to 100 Million.. I think the winner overall was Nintendo xD.

Remembering all those times were I read comments on who the Ps3 would never pass the 360 :P

I also remember the ones who said it would easily beat the 360, it wasn't easy though and I didnt expect it to outsell the 360 until the end of 2014.

360 has put up a pretty good fight considering it hasn't had an official price cut since 2008 (crazy!) wheras Sony has had 3!

Considering it used to cost $599 it could have 10 price cuts before it caught up to the 360s price :^)

10? It was $200 more expensive! not $1000
