I can literally customize every single aspect of my living room with Linux running EVERYTHING. FUCK YOU WINDOWS. Useless OS.

Once you've sat on the couch with a controller (xbox or ps3 you choose) and download a game for $15 which is $60 on consoles and you're playing it at MUCH better graphical settings then you'll KNOW that this isn't some ruse. This is real.

Don't be afraid of change people. Playstation isn't going anywhere... The Xbox however... Might just be displaced.

you can already do that with steam. perhaps you should use it in its current statre. as it does what you state as is on windows. also your not getting linux, your getting steams version of it. who knows what they may or may not change. but the bolded and underlined is already a possibiliy, its steam big picture. Have you used it yet? they also have steam for linux, so you can make your linux box with steam and big picture. that all this is.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Every single one of you will look like fools in 3 years. Valve = genius.

And they're not trying to "dethrone" anyone really. There's just a lot of space in the living room for what they're offering. As a Linux fanboy (yeah I said it) and a major admirer of Valve (though I don't do Steam really), I have to say that I will certainly be getting one.

I mean, it's a better buy than a PC for the living room since it will do everything the PC does already.

Can't believe the users here aren't aware of Valve's midas touch.

Not to mention that they have the most loyal fanbase out there.

I use steam all the time. it is my gaming plat form. but a steam box is useless to  me. A pc with windows and steam (and that i build myself) is prefered to another fragment in the os field. I made my choice to stick with windows for it all. steam on windows is great, but with out its of no use to me atleast.

You know you can run windows inside linux right?

I get what you're saying though.

But I disagree. This is the awesomest thing on the horizon for me. They are just.too.smart to fuck up anything. Betting on Valve is always a good idea.

Is it really going to be a console or will it be a bunch of PC/laptops/tablets with SteamOS?

so why not just run windows with steam installed, that way you aren't running a virtual windows that may not funtcion as well. seems like if windows is still wanted that would be the easier smarter way. so again this steam machine is kind of useless. as a steam user i see no need for it. do you use steam?

seams like the latter. to be honest i think this is just gabe being bitter about windows 8 and its windows store being a threat to steam. which it is. but people love steam (i know i do) so gabe should focus on making steam the best, instead of trying to seperate from windows.

I know. That's what I'm doing every day (my flatmate is a massive Valve fanboy and spends a ton of his money on Steam games). Yes I have used it.

Point is, if the consolidate the service then the average gamer will see the benefit of Steam. Basically the Xbox One was supposed to be what the Steambox will be.

You really don't think this is gonna be a game changer?

it cant be. it would have to be new. it isnt. any one who wants this can do it with a windows pc. just simply plug the pc into your tv ans use steam. It cant compete with the one as it lacks kinect. with out voice control it doesn't offer the ease of xbox one for watching media. I plan on using the xbox one as my main media device for streaming video and watching tv, and i plan on using my pc with steam for gaming. but all the steam box is is a pc without windows, and those have not done well. apple didnt do well (in the pc market share area), chrome hasn't done well, linux (ubuntu) hasn't done well. i think it will be good for steam and valve as it will expand their audience, but not massivly or in a game changing way. more just one more step along valves path. even steam wasn't a game changer in the begining, it took many steps and years.

Windows is NOT wanted.

I actually don't use my steam account at all. I live with 2 game dev dudes who buy steam sale games all the time. Another of my friends (an epic programmer -trust me) basically worships Gabe. I've sat through enough arguments with them trying to fish out why Valve is so awesome, and being open minded, they've convinced me 100%.

So I do make use of steam a lot in other words. We play games in our living room on tv with xbox controllers and they destroy the xbox/ps3 we have there also. I've also really fallen in love with indie games. People who hate on indies (there's a lot of them here) don't know what the fuck they're talking about (I mean it).

Basically, in my opinion MS would've done what Valve is doing if they didn't reverse all their policies. Except that the steambox won't be a closed box. I.e. I'm going to put a Titan inside mine

yeah, I hate windows. (on it right now though - BLEH)

Sensible post for sure.

Time will tell. I see this being big though. Not PS4 big (dat thing be huge comin), but big enough that in 10 years they will have a solid footing in the living room and major cashflow from their hardware sales (in addition to their software sales which are booming already).

so people who hate windows will ove this. yes thats true. but that is the same reason it wont be a game changer. you already hated windows, this did nothing to change your opinion. the average consumer will use what prevailant and easy and cheap. valve with the steam box doesnt cover those bases. they may be easy, but probably not as easy as a console, they be cheap, but will probably have different price levels so only some will be cheaper, i doubt they will be more prevailant than the big three as vavle has no good means on distribution yet. so just not a game changer. but great for peopl who hate windows (why hate something inamate i dont know).

Edit: in 10 years all people will be using is their cell phones. no need for dedicated devices when a cell phone hooked to a screen will do the same things wi th the same power (almost at least). at least thats how i see the futre, the fight is between iOS, android, and windows 8, of which steam will be supported in all three (i hope atleast, just waiting on android support)
