Forums - Nintendo - If consoles sales are all about the software, then what's the point Wii U's second screen?

Nintendo hasnt even put out a defining game for the system( till TW101 came out ). It makes more sense to have this discussion after the thing has another year on the market.

There is this thing you know, that the Wii had... first party software.. you know to play on it...

One would think Nintendoland should of been a title to show off and define what the WIiU could do.  But it seems to not have done that.  They do need something that has enough appeal, and shows off why the Wii U is needed, to be able to get the needed sales.

I think it's there just because Nintendo is set on the idea that they can't just make a console anymore. It has to be different from their previous console, and it has to be different from the competition. While this worked for the Wii, the difference is that the Wii had a good gimmick and a killer app that explained that gimmick perfectly to customers. The Wii U seems to be something that Nintendo themselves isn't even really enthusiastic about, the screen having been a differentiator that they don't necessarily believe in but felt obligated to make.

There may be a killer app yet for the Wii U, but Nintendoland was definitely not it, and the fact that the basic idea of a second screen isn't really appreciably different from the DS with which Nintendo is already very familiar by now makes me think there isn't one coming. If there is, it will likely be something built around asymmetrical multiplayer, which is quite different from what's been done on the DS.

Is it the case of drowning in a blue ocean you insist on creating?  What I saw now is that both Microsoft and Sony ended up preparing the interface end around, with their own offerings.  If it ever ended up being critical, they could respond.

thats how it should be, building a whole console around one feature is insane IMHO, it worked for WIi initially but quickly found how limited that was, function wise. IMHO

Y'all can say whatever, but it'll look stupid to hate the gamepad but love the little black swipe thing Sony has going on with its controller.

did i say i hate gamepad? did i say i like Sony's swipe thing?(dont even know what that is) only one person here is looking stupid and thats the one assuming things

@bold: it's necessary [for me] to mention, Nintendo has this strategy because they believe in low prices, in simplified interfaces, and fun tech.

software sells hardware is overrated. ps2 sold so well not only because of software but also hardware it had a DvD drive. Xbox 360 online , PS3 blueray , Wii because of the Wiimote and so on....thats the main reason Wii U has the gamepad. and now we see something like the kinect and TV stuff for the Xbone. you have to be different if you want to succed. this is not the SNES - Sega era anymore. its mostly about the hardware and what it can do and  not the games as it used to be.

Just dance 4 ironically does a decent job on the second screen.

It lets you be a puppet master lol. So you pick the moves for the chicks to perform.

It also does karaoke, so someone could sign whilst others dance.

Problem is the people who are into just dance probably don't know much about these wii U features and are just as happy playing it on Wii and not upgrading.

The second screen on the WiiU is the 3D effect on the 3DS. Its a gimmick.

Neither sold systems, and will never sell them. The fact that the 2DS is coming out and that most WiiU games can be played with a classic controller, proves this.

Yes, Im ready for the lynching now, angry mob. Like it or not, the OP has a point and I think even Nintendo realizes this. The ONLY thing that will push any systems out the gate are big titles, and Im not seeing SSB or MK needing the second screen.

Sorry to hear you don't like 3D or tablets with games.  There is a large part of the population who enjoy such things.. No worries.

3D is still a niche even outside the 3DS. Add movement to it and on the 3DS it becomes a seriosu issue. Tablet gaming and tablet gamiong with a console is still an unprooven concept and the WiiU is not a good sign for its future success.

In this thread here, where I was asking from a personal experience level to give me ideas of what I am missing from the second screen experience, it ended up being morphed int something else and I was seen as having an agenda or something.  Also, what came up is that "The Wii U isn't selling well, because of the lack of compelling software".  This is the thread:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=168973&page=1#

Ok, my question is this: If it is all about the software, and Nintendo's offering having compelling software, and that makes a difference, why did Nintendo release a system with a second screen?  What is the point of the second screen if that isn't a reason why people will buy systems?  In short, if it is all about the software, then why the second screen.  If it is about software that uses the second screen as a key differentiator, then what software would make people think the second screen is a must have feature, and choose the Wii U over it?  This can be multiplatform third-party that have the Wii U the preferred way to play over the PS4 and XBOX ONE, or signs that the Wii U is getting third party exclusives.  If it is Nintendo's offering, they what new or older IP using the second screen makes the second screen compelling?

In short, why does the second screen matter?

Interface is tied to how software is played and the Wii U screen adds new opportunities to improving software interface, and therefore improving and expandingon the types of available software.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

It's probably one of the more bitter lessons Nintendo has learned this generation -- you can't rely on a hardware novelty/gimmick to sell a game system. I think after the Wii/DS they thought they could.
