Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What Is It About Super Mario 3D World That Doesn't Make It a "True" 3D Mario Game?

Nothing, just the people complaining

Around the Network

For what it's worth, I will say this was the funnest game I played at E3 last year. Playing with 4-players is a lot of fun. It does sorta make it feel like a Mario Party game, but the cat suit is really a blast.

The graphics aren't mind blowing, but they are easy on the eyes and it was one of the few games at the Nintendo booth that appeared to be using anti-aliasing.

I had more fun with this than Mario Kart 8 and DKC: TF for what it's worth.

The only thing that I found kind of annoying is it's very easy for players to wander off the screen which automatically puts you in a bubble, so people were getting put into a bubble constantly. 4-player is pretty hectic, but I would say it's better than NSMB 4-player.

What I would suggest to Nintendo is DON'T skimp on the music. Throw away the NSMB/3D Land formula of 70s porno sounding midi tracks and throw in some nice new musical themes, perhaps even a few orchestral tracks (like the Galaxy series). And get more inventive with later level motifs ... the old NSMB/3D Land ones are getting stale seriously, Galaxy was good because it did things like lava + ice levels mixed into one and what not.

Doing that I think would go a long way in satiating a lot of complaints from Nintendo fans that this isn't a real "3D Mario". It's just a matter of being a little more tuned in to some details.

When people play it they're going to see it is, every bit, a "true" 3D game. People are crapping the pants and making a very big deal about nothing, going off of very little info, as per usual on internet forums.

Granted, when they first revealed it, I too felt disappointment, because it's not the epic 3D Mario that I've dreamed of since Mario 64 came out.

The major difference is, however, that I actually got the fuck over it, and now accept this game for what it is. I haven't loved EVERY Mario game that's come along (Sunshine, Galaxy 2), but I think this game in particular looks pretty damn fun, and I'm still hoping Wart and Shy Guys and Mouser, etc. are secretly somewhere in the game. They REALLY need to bring those guys back. Another straight-up jaunt to Subcon is highly called for.

For me I just want some good, original music tracks.

The "New" Super Mario Bros. series has crap for music, I know they think they are emulating the old Marios, but none of the new music is as good as the old Mario games. It just sounds like midi cheese.

I just don't want to feel like I'm playing a "paint by the numbers" Mario that Nintendo just sorta pooped out for the holidays. Level design is great and all, but I think the NSMB series takes it too far in terms of basically being just a "level design" showcase with barebones presentation in every other area and it's a little tiresome.

NSMBU is the first 2D Mario game in my life I won't play to completion, just because I got half way through and while it's a solid platformer ... I just realized I had no interest in continuning to play. The levels, while designed well just felt like formulaic and unfortunately I think the 3D Land/World series tries to emulate the NSMB series first and foremost.

People love to be disappointed and complain! I for one am buzzing about this game and will love every last second of what it is, not bemoan what it should have been.

I think what people are really griping about even though it's used under the guise "it haz no games" (really? go buy Wonderful 101 or Pikmin 3 or Rayman or Splinter Cell or Monster Hunter 3G) is that the Wii U doesn't have the traditional "epic Nintendo" game.

I think the no games argument is valid, slowly getting better but like I showed u in the other thread its had 18 games release this year compared to 44/48 for PS3/360 in the same time frame in 06/07.Also if u want to compare this years releases for PS3/360 it looks like

Multiplats-DMC, Dead Space 3, Colonial Marines, Metal Gear Rising, Crysis 3, MLB 2k13, Tomb Raider, Sniper Ghost Warrior 2, Walking Dead, Bioshock Infinite, Tiger Woods 14, Army of Two, Defiance, Injustice, Dead Island Riptide, Star Trek, Metro Last Light, Resident Evil Revelations, Grid 2, Fuse, Remember Me, Deadpool, Earth Defense Force, Dynasty Warriors 8, NCAA Football 14, Killer is Dead, PayDay 2, Saints Row 4, Splinter Cell, Disney Infinity, XCOM Declassified, Madden 25, Lost Planet 3, Rayman Legends, Diablo 3, Grand Theft Auto 5

360 exclusive-Gears of War, Minecraft

PS3 exclusive-Sly Cooper, Ni No Kuni, God of War, Last of Us, Final Fantasy 14, Kingdom Hearts HD, bunch of Japanese games

So as u can see PS360 has had 2-3 times as many games as Wii U has gotten this year so far.

Well of course the PS360 are going to have more games, they are mature products with established userbases and developers know those systems inside/out.

I still think there would be far less belly aching about the Wii U if Nintendo simply launched with a "big" game. People want that big Mario 64/Metroid Prime/Zelda: TP type experience before they consider a Nintendo console to be launched properly. That's kinda the problem.

Yes but 360 had 48 games in Jan-Sept of 2006 and PS3 had 44 in the same time period in 2007 so they each had about 2.5x as many games as Wii U this year so either way u try to split it, the "no games" argument is valid especially when u consider half of them are late ports.

I agree that a "big game" would help or at least just not letting all the games get delayed. Wii U had a good launch and sold 2.25m in 2012 but had nothing to back it up. Lets say Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Game & Wario, Wii Fit U all came out in Jan-Apr like planned and Aliens/Metro werent cancelled, that would have essentially doubled the Wii U releases and would have been able to help sustain that momentum post launch. A summer drought would have still occured but a 2-3 month drought is much better than a 7 month drought and too much time has gone by for those titles to instantly revive Wii U, its gonna take some time to rebuilt momentum.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

It's a brand new 3D Mario game. Before someone quote me saying no sh!t Sherlock, it's the first 3D Mario with four player co-op that players have the abilities of Super Mario 2 and that's huge. This has never been done with a 3D Mario game ever (not talking Mario Party). A true Super Mario game.

Look, all you hateful bastards. Listen to this guy:

I agree with you T. it is a bit of a shame but let s hope it plays well and has some secrets to yet reveal.

You can serve my crow to someone else.  I didn't see the unveiling of this game at E3 or whatever.  I just went online and read all of the negative feedback.  I went to see the video, expecting to see Mario punch a baby in the face. When I saw it, I was actually excited for the game.  Seeing the trailers on my Wii U in HD, I thought the graphics were stunning, too!  So I'm hyped for the game.  It's not the 3D game I expected but it really does look like fun and a huge upgrade to NSMBU.

Yeah, I get that people were disappointed because they expected the successor to Galaxy (as in something completely new)..I was as well...at first

...but seriously: They seem to be heavily inspired by SMB2 (all characters are present, you can carry items) and they bring back some obscure outfits from SMB 3 as well (Kuriboh-shoe, Frog suit etc.)

...and it is developed by fucking EAD Tokyo ! It will be great !
