Are we really comparing niche, small Wiiware/eShop titles to games that are GOTY contenders?

So Xenoblade Chronicles, W101 and Nintendoland are now WiiWare/eShop-titles? With a little less bias you maybe could have argued a point, but so you fail.

My initial response is Nintendo.

But upon reflection, I also think Microsoft probably would be able to sell the most new IPs due to their deep pockets and the built in fanbase they built with the 360, While the internet was enflamed by the initial Xbox One policies, common man on the street will probably still want the Live experience with games and will stick with them so long as games like Halo, Gears of War, etc. still show up.

thats the thing, they wont. its all something new from now on

Just because they are doing new IPs doesn't mean they have to be new genres or they can't crib heavily from past successes. Microsoft could easily probably creating a new RPG not name it Fables and still see strong sales from the same group of gamers that bought that series and obviously the same would go for Halo and etc.

I think it's between Sony and Nintendo. Sony have shown they can produce numerous quality IPs this gen and have a willingness to invest in quirky ideas like LBP as well as traditional games like Uncharted. They also have studios with experience in a whole range of genres so could pump out plenty of new IPs.

Nintendo have some very fresh ideas but they rely on their characters to sell their ideas which then go on to move millions. If they had to drop them (characters) then they'd be more reliant on "gimmicks" such as motion controls for big hits, whilst their traditional genre games would probably sell more normal numbers.

From the sounds of it you implied Sony can sell millions of consoles without a massive hit. Which is entirely incorrect. Name one console they've sold that didn't have some kind of huge seller on it? The PS3 was sluggish until a price drop and games like Uncharted started coming onto it attracting gamers. Same with Little Big Planet. The PS2 sold really well, but it also had a huge number of hit games released that boosted its sales. The PS1 was similar. Final fantasy was a big seller as well as GT and Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear. Add in various JRPGS and bam. The PSP sold well due to Monster Hunter and a few other Japanese hits.

I have to fix this. Too many things that don't work.

First, Little Big Planet didn't help push anything. It was a cute IP that sold well, but most people who bought it already owned a PS3. Uncharted is different, but no matter how you slice it, one series that maxes 6m isn't the reason any console succeeds. Especially when that's the best you've got. None of those are "huge sellers." The PS2 had a dominace over the market. It had a NES situation. It was abnormal. That's why it could depend on those 3rd party exclusives. Those are all multiplats now. No more FF, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear, or GTA exclusives ever. And again, those were all due to multimedia sales. Not Final Fantasy. Not any things. Those helped and those drove momentum, but if Sony released the PS1 without a CD player, there would be no playstation today. The PSP did NOT sell because of Monster Hunter. Is that a joke!?

In regards to this topic though, those are mostly third party games that used to be exclusive. Now that they aren't, they don't sell well enough for Sony to depend on them. Sony would only be able to drive consoles with it's new IP's that sell like shit.

People like to brag about how Sony makes so many new IPs. When only two of your new IP's could reach 5m, you have absolutely nothing to brag about.

You seriously think the Playstation console sold solely on multimedia features and not on the ridiculously huge games catalogues they built?

You realise PS3 sales picked up when Sony stopped marketing it as a multimedia hub and started emphasising the video games. Consumers buy games consoles predominantly to play games. The multimedia features are simply an added bonus and aid in value proposition.

SONY would dominate even without Gran Turismo. MS and Nintendo would probably be dead in the water given their track records these last two gens.

I could tell you why your link is pointless and doesn't help the argument of Nintendo coming up with new IPs, but I'll just let you think about what you're implying for a little bit. Plus, I typing this from my phone and my hand is starting to cramp. How do teens text so much???

What, in the name of cats, are you talking about?  Prove me wrong--what massive hit or casual craze has Playstation had recently?  They've had hits, certainly, but not massive hits, and their attentions at capturing the casual market have not taken off.  What am I missing, and why does that make me biased?

don't play dumb. you indirectly said that nintendo's only chance of sucess is scoring a masive hit or starting a "casual craze".

Stop being paranoid and hyper-sensitive.  I never even mentioned Nintendo.  I DID NOT say those things whatsoever.  I said SONY DOESN'T DEPEND ON THOSE THINGS.  Anything else is you reading what you want to read.

You know what the funny thing is, really?  I had Kinect Adventures in mind and I was thinking how Sony failed to match that even though they tried during the same time-frame, yet they're still doing pretty good at the moment.   Then in comes the people yelling about OMG YOU INSULTED NINTENDO.  Honestly, take off the tinfoil hat, you're embarrassing the rest of your fanbase.

then tell me an example of casual craze because I really don't know what that is.

anyway, sony's success with the ps brand was partially due to cd and dvd compatibility of ps and ps2. even blue ray helped ps3 a little. when people buy a video game for a function that is not related to gaming, I would call that a massive hit/casual craze, like you said.

Nintendo already proved with Wii and DS that they can create several new IPs which can be 10+ or even 20+ million sellers.

Only if the casuals bite though. They haven't been able to do that with the WiiU and 3DS.

Actually Nintendo did it several times in their history, or do you think Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and (the in-sourced?) Pokemon weren't new IPs at some time point? Nintendo is in fact the only company in the world which already proved what the thread title asks for: They are able to develop or publish (see also Tetris) the best exclusive IPs (in terms of worldwide popularity and accessibility) which consequently sell by far the most.

Why aren't they doing it now then?
