Nintendo.

Not only does Nintendo have the best selling new IPs of the last gen, they also tend to make, in my opinion, the best games in general. They use their old characters because it's in their best interest. It makes them more money, it makes their fans happy, and it works out for people who like to have something to complain about. New IPs are not intrinsically better or more creative than old IPs. See: Darksiders, Injustice, or Dante's Inferno. Those are all technically new IPs but each sticks closely to the conventions of an established franchise (Zelda, Mortal Kombat, and God of War).

If for some bizarre reason (like people actually buying new IPs instead of complaining about how much they love them) it was not in Nintendo's interests to make games with their established franchises, they'd make awesome games with new worlds in them. Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Wii Fit, Kid Icarus Uprising, Metroid Other M, and so on could have easily been tweaked into new franchises. Hell, Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy could have been branded as new IPs if necessary.

The fact you say Dante's Inferno was meant to mirror God of War in gameplay is really wrong.

What, in the name of cats, are you talking about?  Prove me wrong--what massive hit or casual craze has Playstation had recently?  They've had hits, certainly, but not massive hits, and their attentions at capturing the casual market have not taken off.  What am I missing, and why does that make me biased?

I think u misunderstood him. He saying ur biased for implying a casual craze doesnt count

Then he misunderstood me, because I never implied anything even remotely like that.

From the sounds of it you implied Sony can sell millions of consoles without a massive hit. Which is entirely incorrect. Name one console they've sold that didn't have some kind of huge seller on it? The PS3 was sluggish until a price drop and games like Uncharted started coming onto it attracting gamers. Same with Little Big Planet. The PS2 sold really well, but it also had a huge number of hit games released that boosted its sales. The PS1 was similar. Final fantasy was a big seller as well as GT and Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear. Add in various JRPGS and bam. The PSP sold well due to Monster Hunter and a few other Japanese hits.

For platformers nintendo. For everything else sony.

what platformer that nintendo create after during the N64 or after that outsold LBP?

Nintendo hasn't done any new platforming IP from what I'm aware, but is there really a need to do it? They already have DK, Mario, Yoshi and Kirby. Either way, Nintendo would still dominate that part of the genre, because that is what they release a shitload of. What else does Sony have in that genre?

their biggest IP is by far LBP, but they also are doing some new stuff, Puppeteer is on its way,as well as tearaway (Vita). their efforts have been increasing lately, dont know if you would consider knack a platformer, but their efforts at a platforming/adventure have been increasing, specially with media molecule leading the way and Sony Japan getting its act together. there is still MM's new IP too

You need to go argue with the guy who started this, then, as he was saying Sony has nothing that comes close to 20M sales and thus doesn't have any massive hits.

Puppetear won't do much and is Tearaway a platformer (haven't seen footage since last year)? You also have to consider that every new entry to Nintendo's 2d catolouge sold hot cakes in their start too.

Kirby sold 5m+, Mario sold 40m+, DK sold 9m+ and Yoshi 4m+ (even though he was in SMW).

They have a lock on the genre and has the most experience in the genre between the three companies. There is a reason for why Wii U is getting 6 plattformers within a year on the market (2 third party) and 3DS has its fair share of them as well. All Nintendo has to do is just make a new character and that is basically it.

Innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnncorrrect!

Sony consoles survive because of two things. New media services and Gran Turismo. That's it. Not the games. Not the "variety." Built in CD player when CD players were new and too expensive (PS), built in DVD player when DVD players were new and too expensive (PS2), built in Blu-ray player when Blu-ray players were new and too expensive (PS3), and portable DVD multimedia device when they didn't even exist yet (PSP). The proof is in the PS3, the PSP Go, and the Vita. People cared WAY less about the PS3 because it wasn't a cheaper alternative. Once it was, people bought it. And didn't buy games. PSP Go failed because by that time, the iphone was out did every media thing the PSP did, but better, smaller, with cheaper games, and it had a phone built into it. No one bought it. The ones who did didn't buy games. The Vita is failing because right now, the iphone is out and does every media thing the Vita does, but better, smaller, with cheaper games, and it has a phone built into it. No one is buying it. The ones who do are STRUGGLING to buy enough games for even one title to hit 1m sales after almost 2 years.

And I GUARANTEE in one year of the PS4 coming out, it will be in a far more dire position than people think now, because everyone already has a place to watch netflix, hulu, blu-ray, DVD, etc. It's 2013. Sony can only depend on games this time, and it's last 3 attempts, especially it's first true attempt the Vita, were complete financial disasters.

Sony can not servive on their new IP's alone. They barely do now. It's thanks to Gran Turismo that they do. A racing sim. A racing sim that, if ended, would have it's sales and fans shift to any of the other dozen quality and fantastic racing sims before Sony could even think to create another one.

So again, you are wrong. Understand now?

You're so much fun, man, honestly.  I hope you stick around.

So the PS3 is selling so well right now because of Blu-Ray, GT5, and that's all?  Seriously?  It's the top selling home console at the moment based on that alone?  Wow.  That's bloody amazing, even though there are much cheaper and better Blu-Ray players out there and better selling franchises this gen that have multiple installments.  Obviously GT isn't outselling Halo, yet the PS3 has sold more units in a shorter period of time--that's all due to Blu-Ray?

That's awesome  =]

Tell me more about how Sony has nothing else besides those two things, please.  If you're right, no one will want the PS4 and it will crash and burn.  Should be an interesting launch.

You're fun too. :)

The PS3 is definitely selling now because of the games. No doubt about it. It's a video game console. But if you took out the sales just of people who only bought the PS3 for a cheap Blu-ray player, it would have sold tens of millions less. Cut another 10 million for Gran Turismo. Then PS3 would just have Uncharted to stand on. And that would make the console a failure. There's no way PS3 would have matched those number had it not been for Blu-ray. And if it didn't, you wouldn't be seeing a PS4 right now because the PS3 was a financial failure. What do you think that would have shaved off of it? If is wasn't for multimedia, the Playstation brand wouldn't have servived the PS2.

I never said Sony has nothing else. Their games are great, but they do NOT sell great, and in this gaming business, exclusives sell consoles. Period. Sony's IPs sell embarassingly less than Nintendo or Microsoft IPs. They sell embarassingly on their own. Nintendo has sold over 5 million copies on more new IPs this gen alone than Sony has in it's ENTIRE EXISTANCE. There is no competition. There is no debate. Sony would have absolutely no chance to survive with completely new IPs when you look at the statistics. Especially now that it can't rely on a new DVD 4K to rely on. The Vita is undeniable proof.

Sony would Dreamcast out. Sony still might Dreamcast out. The PS2 had GTA as an exclusive. PS4 couldn't dream of that kind of IP control in this day and age. The Dreamcast launch broke records at the time. A launch has NOTHING to do with how well a system sells. Momentum does. Momentum is driven by exclusives. Exclusives Sony can't sell barring Gran Turismo. Sony would make great new IPs for a few year, and that would be it's last console. And that could still happen. 1 million is a big number, but it isn't 80 million. See what happens to sales starting February when the XBO rage wares off. Especially without Gran Turismo.

I'm seriously skeptiptical of how well it will do. I'm definitely sure it won't have legs past January, but with a more expensive XBO, that will help it for now. But Sony has literally no IP power.

I'm not excited for the launch. That is pradictable. The launch WINDOW is where the games will begin to get interesting.

Oh alright. I wasn't sure where the argument originated from. I say 5m+ are pretty good numbers for new IPs. Especially considering what the PS3 had sold when those titles came out. Whether something is a hit or not should be based on how many copies sold as well as what the console install base is.

... you do know that you're proving the opposite point true, don't you?  That Sony can sell millions of consoles without depending on scoring a massive hit or starting a casual craze?  Somehow I think you missed something.  Regardless, thanks for helping the argument for Sony.

the bolded words say everything about your bias. either way, sony can't sell any console without other companies while nintendo can make it's console a success almost by itself.

What, in the name of cats, are you talking about?  Prove me wrong--what massive hit or casual craze has Playstation had recently?  They've had hits, certainly, but not massive hits, and their attentions at capturing the casual market have not taken off.  What am I missing, and why does that make me biased?

don't play dumb. you indirectly said that nintendo's only chance of sucess is scoring a masive hit or starting a "casual craze".
