Forums - General - So how is a said, non-existent being, God, supposed to be the greatest source of evil?

Does evil even exist? Does anyone ever think of himself as evil? Or is it just something to call people?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Claiming you know for a fact that god doesn't exist, that NO form of "god" or "gods" or "spirits" exist, is just as ignorant and small-minded as trying to claim that any other spiritual beliefs one might have, are "FOR SURE" the only correct beliefs. You can't "prove" there is a god, any more than you can "prove" there isn't. Making these kinds of arguments and sparking these kinds of debates......really serves no good purpose.

Evil is a subjective term and relative since its definition differs through the history of mankind. One considers some things to be evil while others do not. Actually evil/good doesn't exists. It also differs per species what evil is. Some species of primates, 50% of pregnancy occurs by rape. Although we consider rape as evil, for that species it is necessary to survive since evolution 'designed' it that way.

Lookout, we got a relativist here! Hide your objective truths!

Pretty sure Augen nailed it. When atheists talk about "God" being a source of evil, they're talking about humans interpretations of the will of the gods. Not much of a 'gotcha.' Shouldn't be that hard to figure out. I think even theists would agree that a lot of evil is done in the name of one god or another.

The "greatest source of evil," to use hyperbole, is not God, but the interpretation of gods via organized religions and the inability of humans to come to terms with systems of beliefs and traditions that contradict one another.

Since most religions are based upon the egocentric point of view that theirs is not only the correct point of view (at the risk of damaging the faith in said religion or invalidating it altogether) but the only point of view, it doesn't take a great deal of intelligence to see how religious conflict has and will continue to be one of the greatest sources of strife and misery afflicting the human race.

uh...

if we say god is the source/creator of everything...

then yes all evil must have come from him, all good also, meaning to an extent it must be part evil...

I’m not entirely sure what we’re discussing here, but if it is the question: where does evil come from?, then the answer has to be the Devil – evil comes from the devil. I say this because the Devil is the first one to break God’s rules, which made him, the Devil, evil. So, “evil”, I would say is nothing more than breaking God’s rules.

Additionally, saying God is evil, is like saying any other rule maker is evil. Is the government or the courts evil, simply because they make rules and people don’t follow? The evil one is the one that breaks the rules, not the one that makes them.

Now, if you don’t believe in God, then I guess that makes Man the rule maker, and if it is that Man breaking his own rules then, only Man can be evil – no ?.

that is a poor comparison between law makers and god with regards to this

law makers do not give people the capacity to do evil but god does

again if we say everything came from god then evil also came from it

No, because you can make the rules and the OFFENSE or CRIME or EVIL ACT, e.g. murder, or possession of a banned substance, sex with monkeys whatever, but making up the offence doesn’t make you the offender.  So even if God created the offence called EVIL, that doesn’t mean he is evil. Again, it is the one that breaks the rules is evil – no?.

It’s like you’re saying the guy that thought up that murder should be a crime, that person is evil, because he thought it up?
