They should either go full out with cutscenes or not bother at all. I really, really disliked Subspace Emissary. I had no idea what was going on (the lack of voice acting helped with that) and it just seemed like a bunch of barely-related scenes put together for the sake of having it there. So if they're ditching it altogether; that's a very good move in my eyes.

I agree in that SSE ultimately felt like a wasted opportunity, but given the amount of time and effort that apparently went into its development, all that indicates is that a full-scale single-player focused crossover game would have to be its own project, something that could have voice acting (for the series that have it), and all kinds of references and stuff. To do it *right,* you'd really have to do something unprecedented in scale...

Story mode in Brawl? Ain't nobody got time for that!

Now, use those resources to increase the new characters and reduce the charater cuts and we have a sweet exchange.

I love how the internet is overreacting, again. Cause it's Nintendo. People acting like story mode is the biggest reason for having Smash Bros. He never said there isn't a singleplayer. He said, it isn't cutscene based cause he wants to surprise gamers.

love how you are so quick to defend Ninty you arent even reading the responses, most people seem to be happy about this. They just find the reasoning faulty

Defending Ninty? Of course. Cause enough people (only vgchartz) who aren't even slightly itnerested in Nintendo Games are acting like it's the worst thing that ever happened to Smash Bros. lol. Why whinig about the reasoning when it's totally okay without a cinematic experience?

did you even read? No one is complaining about lack of cutscenes, people are happy or indifferent. Actually read the thread sometimes instead of flying in on your Ninty cape, trying to save the day.

I was trying to think of how it would feel to hear that about an upcoming game I am excited about.
I haven't really played much of Smash Bros but I never did get into it. I played the emissary missions and they just seemed like long empty corridors that were boring. I would just run constantly and there was never any challenge.

I try to imagine its like taking the story from Mario Bros out of the games. That might not be such a bad thing since so many people complain about the story. I would hope content was added to make up for the loss though.

I don't know many fighting games that have much story. I just picked up Tekken Tag 2 the other day and I have been playing it but haven't seen much story to it.

The reason you havent seen much story in Tekken Tag 2, because their isnt any. Tekken Tag games are non-canon, they are essentially spinoffs, play a Tekken game proper (1-6) and you'll see plenty story.

And you didn't read my answer, I wasn't even talking about vgchartz. I was talking about GAF, IGN, Gamespot, etc.

I know 3DS can handle cutscenes but the question is, how many? If I'm not mistaken most 3DS cards are 2GB. But if Sakurai said that all the cutscenes will be availiable then more power to him. The Wii U is being based off of the 3DS version since the 3DS version was the first one to come to Sakurai's mind. So when the 3DS version has reached full capacity so will the WiiU version since he "wanted them to be the same game".

The 3DS can handle cartridges of up to 8GB, that's the same size as a Dual-Layer Wii Disk. Theorethically the 3DS should be able to handle about the same amount of cutscenes as SSBB had.

Exactly, UP TO. I think if the team uses a 8GB card then the price will show. Haven't seen a $50 Nintendo made 3DS game yet.

Well, I believe Resident Evil: Revelations uses a 4GB card and the game is $20 right now (launched at regular price).  I know RE: R doesn't use a 2GB card considering it's over 2GB.

Yup. General opinion a few days ago: SSE was shitty. Shitty gameplay, bland stages, bland cutscenes, ruined unlocking the characters.

Really, because I remember Wii owners harping on about how SSBB has the best story mode in a fighter game ever and it made the game better than fighters like Street Fighter IV which didn't have one.  For years fans of other fighters have wanted great story modes, Mortal Kombat was praised heavily for including one.

Oh but now the new SSB has removed it, so suddenly a crap feature nobody liked or wants.

I doubt you read all of the posts in a forum and only look at certain ones that you want to call out.

It's already been posted here than the new Smash Bros WILL have a "story mode."  Just not SSE.

Then why come to this thread and complain about what people are doing on other sites?? Take it up with them, because right now you arent really contributing and preaching to the choir

You're going to have to take the time to provide citations on that one.

To make a separate point: there is a reason why i buy this explanation. One prevailing theme out of Sakurai's three latest works under Nintendo (Kirby Air Ride which was his last with HAL Labs, Brawl, and Kid Icarus Uprising) is an effort to provide substantive reward for players' achievements. He did an achievement system 2 years before Microsoft, and his achievements actually counted for something (in-game rewards). Hell, Air Ride is the reason why i scratched my head when i first learned about Achievements (because they give you nothing), and why i still don't understand the big deal about them to this day, reinforced by Brawl and Uprising which continued to do it right.

The point of my digression is that Sakurai places a high value on rewarding player activity. In the case of a large-scale story mode, the reward (aside from a more clear-cut way to unlock characters) was the cutscenes. If the reward is something that can be packaged off by anyone with a Capture Card and enjoyed by anyone with an internet connection, what's the motivation?

He wants to implement something more dynamic. And that's why i buy his explanation at face value, even if it's a little strange. Sakurai is a little strange (and insanely awesome).
