Forums - Sony - Polygon: PS4 Indie Dev Costs - Sony "handing them out like candy"

This is vapor news.

How many were shiped? To whom? Where? When?
And what qualifies a developers to get a free PS4 devKit?

This is Sony PR at its best. I thought, by now, people would start be more skeptical with Sony´s "We are the good guys" talk.

Sounds like somebody's butt hurts.

I'm generally not a fan of indie games, but the price of the devkit being as it is now, and cheaper later, allows even just me to make a game... in theory. Indie devs are naturally quite happy.

I could be wrong but werent they published by sony when they made that game?  I know they had a 3 game contract with them

Published by Sony but it is a indie game development... thatgamecompany.

Indie developers uses full hardware when they have buget... there are AAA indie developers, not only the small ones lol.

You can sign in to Sony development program to receive DevKits if you have a good project in mind... there are the PlayStationFirst Academic Development Program for universities too (free DevKits here too).

It is not that hard to get a PS4 DevKit... and you don't receive a free one you can buy for $2500.

So to clarify, you have named one game (that does not come close to using all of the PS3's power) that appeared at the end of a generation, published by Sony under a three game deal that would most certainly have included provisions for dev kits, and you think this is somehow indicative of the idea that Indies everywhere are going to be using loaned PS4 dev kits to push the PS4's capabilities.

Right, well that shut me up.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

5 years? that's news to me.

So on avg how long does it take a indie dev to make game? Cuz while 1 yr free sounds good wont they have to pay for it after the year?

Ok i just ask cuz if the avg game takes more then 1yr then the kit isnt free  so that would kind defeat the purpose of giving them for free wouldnt it

Didnt this used to be called moneyhatting ans was a really terrible thing?

I'm consistent....

Good for them. I approve.

No. Getting games or DLC as a 1 Year timed exclusive was pointless moneyhatting. That was seen as a bad thing.

Letting people develop games for your console, for free, is just being good. There is nothing stopping these developers from putting the games on competing platforms, so it isnt a moneyhat.

Name us a few of those.

Last gen? Journey for example.

Those developers. Beside, Journey wasn´t indie, they had a contrat with Sony for 3 games.

I want to see a indie game comming out of the blue with no additional subsides other than the "free devKit" comming to the PS4.

or they can just add a "Video in/out" and let people use the PS4 like a devkit just like xbox one, hook the console into your PC and start porting, consoles should have done this awhile ago, android phones have this feature

Why it need a video in to be a devkit? I didn't understand.

Anyway you can't reach the full potential of the console with the own console... so you can't use all the full Xbone hardware with the Xbon consumer like a devkit... if you need something AAA you will need to buy a Xbone DevKit.

PS. There are rumors about Xbone consumer devkit is only for the Windows RT OS too.

the Xbox has an "HDMI In" and an "HDMI Out" meaning you can use it as a devkit easily, the PS4 should have had this, and newer PSVitas in japan have this as well.

you can use the HDMI In port and hook it up with your PC and it will act as a devkit.

What on earth on your talking about the development will be done through the network port, unless your talking about trying to share 1 monitor for both your PC and console.

The potential of enabling every customer to be an indie-dev compared to "if you are indie, you can have it for free" is obviously larger on xbox. But still nice to see Sony giving away some PS4s for free...
Hey Sony, I want to make some random pong-clone, please give me a devkit! :D
