Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will The Same Strategy For The 3DS Work On The Wii U?

So if Nintendo dropped the price of the Wii U and kept pumping out first party titles would they get the same results they are getting with the 3DS?  Personally I think Nintendo has a lot more competition in the home console space than the handheld space, so I don't think they would be moving Wii Us as fast as they are 3DS's, but it would obviously boost their sales.  Personally I think people expect a lot more from a home console than a handheld, so I think Nintendo would have to do a lot more.  Also Nintendo does have 2 consoles to support, I think the 3DS is in a good enough place and I think Pokemon X and Y will carry it for a while that they can cut support for the 3DS for a while, not too long, and focus on only pumping out Wii U games.  What do you guys think, should they drop the price of the Wii U when they have a lot of games coming out, or will the same strategy not be as effective on the Wii U?

A quick, lazy 3D Mario won't work on the Wii U like SM3DL worked on 3DS.
No Mario Kart this holiday season
Price cut probably not happening
Heavy competition.

I personally don't see this holiday being the turnaround that the 3DS had.

Lets not underestimate Nintendo's lineup this year, they have Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Super Luigi U, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker HD and Super 3D Mario World.  Tbh I think that's solid, and they have Mario Kart in early 2014, not holiday season.

It's definitely solid, but the 3D World is no galaxy or 64, it's not going to set the world on fire. There is also no Mario Kart.

Donkey Kong will be big, but it won't send systems flying. Wind Waker is a port, and W101 and P3 aren't going to sell systems.

I think it will be a good holiday, but it's not going to turn it around like the 3DS was.

The lineup is certainly promising, but such a turnaround won't be as likely for the Wii U. Sales will be boosted, no doubt, but the 3DS also had the benefit of having its only direct competitor completely languishing due to mistakes made by its own manufacturer, not to mention coming off a DS brand that was still selling strongly.

By contrast, the Wii brand is in the shitter, and the U is going up against not only the 360 and PS3 this holiday, but two very competent-looking new consoles with very strong lineups.

And Mario 3D World will do nothing for system sales considering anyone who would buy it for that already bought it for a multiplayer Mario already bought it for NSMBU.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I think Wind Waker is a complete remake, not a port, not 100% sure.  The 3D Mario I admit is kinda dissapointing, but its from the same guys that made galaxy, so it could still be amazing, or it could be average, Ill wait to see.  I think Pikmin 3 is going to sell systems, it is by far the best looking Wii U game so far, I was suprised at how good it looked when I saw it, Wonderful 101 is coming out the same week at GTA 5...so ya I think its gonna get destroyed.  Donkey Kong Country Returns sold over 6 million copies I think, I'm all but sure a sequel to a game that successful will sell a lot of systems.  Tbh I don't think its possible for them to turn it around this year like with the 3DS even if they did the price drop, just because of the PS4 and X1, but I think they should lower the price now to even be competative, a $350 Wii U vs a $400 PS4...I think the choice is obvious.

If they keep pumping out the games non-stop throughout 2014 & 2015 and cut the price, then absolutely.

If they cut the price of the Pro SKU to $250 and hammer home its universal remote functionality along with its excellent line up of family friendly games, then yeah I think they could turn things around...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

The Wii U will have a 5 year life span and sell about 30 million IMO

The 3DS also got a monster (no pun intended) exclusive in the Monster Hunter series for Japan. Plus Mario Kart for Japan.

Plus an $80 price drop within like 7 months. And Ocarina of Time Remake > Wind Waker, OoT is far more popular.

The Wii U is not equivalent.
