Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will The Same Strategy For The 3DS Work On The Wii U?

So you are saying that a 3D Mario game won't help the Wii U? Just because you think it looks lazy and unfun.

Okay. An interesting opinion, but I'll take it for what it is.

Oh it will help it, I never said it wouldn't. I just don't think it will do what SM3DL did for the 3DS. Or even what galaxy did for the Wii. I expect it to bolster sales, but not to the extent of past 3D mario games.

I guess we'll have to wait an see how much Super Mario 3D World helps the Wii U. At this point, though, anything could.

Just a question. What do you think of the Call of Duty series?

Completely different scenario my friend.

Call of duty is bought by a whole different audience, and part of the reason it gets bought every time is because of the online multiplayer.  It has nothing to do with quality, it's just the communities.

3D Mario is usually the game that sells Nintendo consoles. Sunshine is kind of the black sheep of the family, and it's sales, as well as sales of the gamecube reflect that.

So the question here is basically "Will games and a lower-price point sell a console?"

I would hope so, as that is what gaming companies have been doing for years to sell their consoles.

Well you have to take into consideration that Nintendo is already selling the Wii U at a loss, so if they were to cut the price then they would be in a unprecarious position where they would have to hope that if someone bought a Wii U that they buy a lot of games for it, if some casuals pick it up and say only buy a couple games then Nintendo is losing money.  With the 3DS they could afford to cut the price and still sell it and break even.  So the thing is they have to put out must own game after game to make sure people buy enough games so they don't make a loss on the consoles bought.  Hope that makes sense :).

In the end, Call of Duty and 3D Mario are both just games that sell a lot, the former of which seemingly criticised a bunch on the internets lately, yet that's had no impact on sales. Shouldn't do anything for Super Mario Cats either.

The thing is it's completely different for Wii U. The two games skyrocketed 3DS were MK, and 3D Mario Land, along with a price cut. Nintendo has stated they have no plans to cut price. I do still think 3D Mario will sell, they obviously need to advertise for it, but they most likely will for 3D Mario.

What's different is the competition. 3DS had virtually no competition, Wii U is going to up against PS4 and One. When you compare PS4 to Wii U and factor in value, PS4 wins hands down.

I'd love to see a $50 price cut and added storage, but I don't see Nintendo doing this. Maybe even include an external HDD.

True, although the PS4/XO are likely gonna sell out this holiday no matter what Nintendo does, so they wont really be competition until next year. I even remember something about Nintendo saying they're not worried about the next gen launches, so combine that statement with their no plans for price cut one, and it's pretty unlikely they'll drop the price this year. Of course, they're most likely just saying they wont cut it so people don't hold out on buying Wii Us.

I'm not sure if I really agree with this.

2D Mario outsells 3D Mario on basically every console they've been on together. Even NSMB2 is on pace to outsell Mario 3D Land eventually.

Mario 64 was really the only 3D Mario that sold systems I think. Wii Sports sold the Wii, everything else just piggybacked off it. Smash Bros. was more important to the GameCube than Mario Sunshine.

And Super Mario Galaxy are my favorite Nintendo games of the last 10 years easily, so I definitely appreciate the 3D Marios.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo lost on the 3DS after the price cut. They only recovered from it last year, if memory serves correctly.

The point I was making was that if Nintendo (or any gaming company) slash the price and throw in games, their console will sell.
