The thing is it's completely different for Wii U. The two games skyrocketed 3DS were MK, and 3D Mario Land, along with a price cut. Nintendo has stated they have no plans to cut price. I do still think 3D Mario will sell, they obviously need to advertise for it, but they most likely will for 3D Mario.

What's different is the competition. 3DS had virtually no competition, Wii U is going to up against PS4 and One. When you compare PS4 to Wii U and factor in value, PS4 wins hands down.

I'd love to see a $50 price cut and added storage, but I don't see Nintendo doing this. Maybe even include an external HDD.

True, although the PS4/XO are likely gonna sell out this holiday no matter what Nintendo does, so they wont really be competition until next year. I even remember something about Nintendo saying they're not worried about the next gen launches, so combine that statement with their no plans for price cut one, and it's pretty unlikely they'll drop the price this year. Of course, they're most likely just saying they wont cut it so people don't hold out on buying Wii Us.
