Forums - Nintendo - Could Nintendo do anything wrong with the 3DS that would allow the Vita to over take it in a few years?

There is nothing Nintendo can do to screw up. The only way Vita is going to pass the 3DS is if Sony start giving them away for free

The only thing that would make Vita surpass 3DS is Nintendo stopping to manufacture and sell the 3DS once and for all.

There´s still a massive lineup of high anticipated games for the platform so, no, with the current price and library, there´s no way for Vita to surpass the 3DS.

There's still Monster Hunter (at least 1 game), Pokemon (2-3 games) and Zelda yet to release. I'm sure it will also get DQXI in Japan and a few first party titles left that can be very successful. Add to that the growing library (DS library pushed it for years) and I really doubt the Vita cna catch 3DS sales or even 1/4 of it at this rate.

They already have. They never purchased enough developers. Other than the major 3 titles already in the pipeline(MH4, POKEMON, LoZ) they cant really support 3DS cause they need to focus on expensive, time consuming HD dev for Wii U. It would make sense if they abandoned 3DS and wii U software wise the same way they did GBA and Gamecube to produce DS and Wii in 2014. This will allow Vita to gain a larger foothold in Japanese software that may not be able to destroy as Im sure that Vita can compete with their gen 9 handheld specwise.

I am uncertain if I can believe that, what with Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, Mario and Luigi and others already out this year. I doubt the 3DS will suffer a software drought anytime soon.

Also, the Vita is selling about 5k a week in the US. I don't see why any dev or retailer would support a system with those sales. As such, I think it's far more likely that the 3DS will outlive the Vita.

By the way, there´s still Mario & Luigi, Sonic, Mario Party, Mario Golf, Super Smash Bros, Phoenix Wright, Batman Blackgate, some japanese rpgs like Bravely Default and  Dragon Quest VII, Yoshi´s Island, Layton Azran Legacy... and a  new Flipnote studio. There are just so many games to come that I don´t believe the 3Ds will soon lose its momentum

No. I doubt a few years would be enough even if Nintendo stopped manufacturing the 3DS right now. They'd have to stop manufacturing the 3DS and start doing things to benefit the Vita, like advertise it.

My estimate for 3DS software drought is for mid to late 2014 once the known titles like pokemon, new zelda and MH have released.I don't think we'll see another round of titles from Nintendo besides the 3 mentioned above because they already need and will need all hands on the Wii U software ship.

The PSP has been dead in America for years and I can still go buy one at my local Walmart or Best Buy. New titles have long ago dried up on this side of the shores to boot. Why developers would is easy. Less competition and as smaller Japanese devs are finding digital is really profitable. Titles like Rogue Legacy on Steam for instance would work really well for the portable format. Make more money because they dont have to get retail presence and often Sony seems willing to promote the titles for them on PSN.Sony could capture the development of studios not ready for big development in the west much the way they have given Vita a niche for software support in Japan.

My time table would put this 3.5 to 4 years into the life of the 3DS. That seems to be the about when Nintendo abandons a console software wise and hope that 3rd parties float it so they can start on their next venture. That hardly ever works out for them though. This is what creates the more rapid shift completely to their new console. I am seeing a situation Kinda like how PSP did with the DS in Japan. It didnt beat it in weekly sales in the beginning but torwards the end it did. It was just way too late to really matter.

79 millions sales with not so good software sales cause of piracy....

The real irony is that Sony set the PSP up so piracy didn't hurt them in the least. The PSP had proprietary memory, so even if you illegally downloaded the game, you still had to buy a Sony memory card. Sony memory cards sell between three and  four times more than SD cards.

Make no mistake: Sony made a killing on the PSP, piracy or not. Developers got the shaft in a big way, though. This is probably one of the peripheral reasons developers don't want to hop ond the Vita: it was hacked in Japan before it was even released in North America, so supporting the system is basically throwing their game out into the wild for free.

Nah.  I got a PSP and the memory format is the Memory Stick Pro Duo.  Lots of companies made 'em because cameras support it.  I have a couple of Sandisk Memory Sticks that I used to use.  Vita on the other hand--that memory card isn't designed to be used for shit except the Vita.

Not exactly true. Yes, other companies make them, but they all pay licenses to Sony to make them because all sorts of memory stick lines are owned by Sony. By comparison, SD cards have no official license. It's just a categorization of memory cards with some set standards set by the companies which make them.

A lesson I learned too late: microSD adapter sleeves exist for both memory pro duo and Vita cards.

There are MicroSD adapters for Vita memoryCards?! O.O?! WHERE?!

Pretty certain they don't exist because an adapter would be physically impossible and they wouldn't have the proper encryption keys to work even if they could fit.

That's Why I ask him.. because I own a PSVita and I'm sure that the MemCards are as small as a MicroSD... I'm sure I would know sometime ago about it, if it exist...

mid- late 2014 drought? I highly dought it. The games that will have come at that time will be SSB4 and MH4(US+Europe), and i can guess that during this time nintendo will have games such as Kirby and LoZ Majora's Mask. That and more, and beside i can tell you that 2015 will have Pokemon Z and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Remakes will come + Much Much More!
