I love how "traditional" gamers think they are traditional gamers...... I've been gaming since Atari and commodore heck even had an MO5.... so I think I'm pretty traditional..... but I'm all for innovation and casual and a broader spectrum of entertainment on my gaming rig.... they are not mutually exclusive..... and actually allows me to share my hobby with more people than ever before....

it never has been that easy for gamers to make acceptable the console in the main entertainment spot of the household... parents, wives have a way better perception of gaming console because companies like Nintendo, sony and MS changed the basic use of a console.... Wii made it fun for casuals and older people, Sony made it a great DVD (with PS2) and BR player and Netflix box with PS3.... MS tried new stuff for younger kids to play with and casual as well as entertainment apps that appeal to other crowds than just gamers and therefore makes it a central piece in an entertainment set up not just for gamers....

that being said on the DRM issue I think we didn't have the full story and it was probably not as clear cut as people put it.... because when you really think about it if it was really that negative and the sharing plan was really a scam (you can't just say that plan was BS just because you don't see how it could have worked, that's pure conjecture with absolutely no solid ground) I don't see how MS was planning to make it appealing to customers at launch....
it'd be like openly saying I'll rent you a car but without the wheels and they are custom made so you can only buy them through me..... there is no way that it was the plan, it doesn't make commercial sense with or without the public backlash.... so yeah I'm dead convinced their was more to it than what we know now that would have been incentive for us to accept the DRM plan....

What is innovative about it if you own a PC and these things are all possible there? Being "ahead of its time" its only a marketing ploy and you all know a PC can do everything the Xbone does except for probably the Kinect things. Always on, DRM, Digital games are all the norm to PC gamers, but they were forced to accept it. This is majorly an ownership issue.

Guess MS wanted to capture the Steam craze, with its pros as well as the cons. Because millions of gamers just don't game on a PC. Sure PC gamers were forced to adapt, but in the end they are largely happy and are currently gorging on Steam Summer sales.

Again, just seems like the uncertainty of it all coupled with Sony taking advantage of the gamer old tradition of "keeping things the same/change is strange" mindset. Not that I approved as again, the global internet infrastucture just isn't where MS thought it would be at.

Angry Joe was talking to Major Nelson about Steam sales before and MS involving themselves in them after E3. Major Nelson shut him down on the idea and just like the impossible nature of DRM being turned off before the launch they magically pulled a 180 a week late. Millions of gamers might not game on a PC, but the right way to lure gamers over is to use price which Steam and much later on Sony started to do. This is like what...the third Steam-like sale Sony has had in this year alone? I've seen Microsofts "deep discount" sales when I had my 360 last year and I applaud them for finally embracing it, but the way Major Nelson acted with Angry Joe in regards to it was not right at all.

We can say Sony is taking advantage of the old traditions but we must remember that they before MS experimented in the trend. Difference between themselves and Microsoft is they didnt see the quality control of the contrete use of the device without a secondary peripheral (thus far) so they didnt push it ahead of the main console. Still to this day they never felt the need to push the Eyetoy if they cant sell it to people. IGN spoke to the head of SCEA and it was quite a personable interview on the subject. They basically stated that they cant force the Eyetoy on the consumer and they never have.

Can't really blame Nelson for that though. MS was or is at the time very selective about their information. Messaging was a huge issue and I doubt he knew the true ins and out of X1. He is a PR guy, not a engineer.

I used to like Major Nelson to tell you the truth, he used to lightly cover things but I guess thats his "personality" for the camera. Now I dont think he's that personable unless a fan is kissing Microsofts ass. Joe was a pro-360 gamer but was very, very concerned for MIcrosoft and was treated like he had zero common sense when in the end everything turned out exactly how he said it would. PR is one thing, being a dick and a hypocrite is another and he did not help Microsofts PR. PR guys don't have to comment.

DRM in the tech world is a light area to tread upon unless like the casuals you just accept it because you don't know any better, which is what Yusuf at MS was alluding to when he basically was talking about disregarding the gamers and focusing on the wider audience. In any area of where people are educated about a profession or hobby they will protect their right to that passtime. We've seen how PC gaming turned out and there is no Valve to look out for our best interests on consoles. As I said both MS and Sony support DRM outside of the gaming industry and so does Apple and they've implemented it as such outside. You have to go mostly digital before you can take away peoples rights and thats a discussion they need to have with gamers on consoles because console gamers will not accept codes because it negates resale. Maybe ten to fifteen years from now, but we still need a differentiating buffer between ourselves and PC gaming.

once again yeah sure you can do all that on PC.... but unless you have a bad ass set up... PC is nowhere remotely close in terms appeal, fun and convenience over consoles.... at least for me... my anti social geek years are behind me

it's pretty much the same argument as saying why do you buy a rig with OS X or Win on it when you can get suze, Ubuntu, debian, mint or anything Linux/FreeBSD for free.... this is true too doesn't change the ease of use convenience and ergonomic of the 2 main PC OSs especially when you are not versed in the world of the nerds....

here it's the same.... sure I know the issue I have been exclusively gaming on PC between dreamcast and Xbox (the first one) so I have done my share of custom rigs (even prior it being my only gaming rig) and geeking around..... not once have I had anything close in terms of entertainment on a PC even during LAN parties... once again the only way for me to put it on par with what a console provides me would be to make it a hybrid HTPC / gaming rig set up in my living room going through my AVR to get 5.1... plugging it on a high end HDTV and have a local multiplayer set up with XB pads... which would make it pretty unpractical for regular PC use (work, websurfing) and greatly increase the price of it over a 400 to 500 rig that will last me for almost 10 years such as PS4 or XB1...
and I'm not even talking about the wife that would go ballistic if I had a wart like that in the living room (yeah no man cave yet lol )

so PC could be 10 times better in terms of graphic output.... at a similar price there is no way it can achieve what I expect from my entertainment center.... or at least not as conveniently and practically than a console, with no hassle a polished dashboard, ease of use for everybody from my younger sister to almost my 92 year old grandma (yeah I'm pushing it here but you get the point) easy setup, multiplayer... and the entire community is on par everywhere... etc...

so yeah I'm a long lasting traditional gamer that enjoynovelty in the console world and the direction MS is taking (not talking about DRM).... I want a gaming console... with Kinect technology because I think it's fun even if it's silly.... and I want all the non gaming entertainment crap they plan because my entertainment needs in my living room for me and my family doesn't revolve only around games.... actually lately it might be one of the last use I have with my console (yet I still have 25 games to play and bought more than 200 this gen)

so PC is out of the question for me, WiiU doesn't appeal to me since the N64 and PS never did and both don't pack up what I want or at least don't have the vision that suites me the best.... gamers even traditional come in all colors and some people have hard time understanding that.... I don't like Sony and PS4 but if it is your most suited rig good for you and enjoy it.... sure i'll tease or talk shit every now and then.... but that's just like I talk back to my friends on their sport teams....

I watched that video when it was just released. Man, after the DRM was removed, I felt so bad for Joe because MN trated him like shit during the interview when he asked that.

Sorry for bad English.

Yeah, Joe goes to E3 to have more content for his show. He tells everyone before hand if that hes not a professional and he hasn't taken classes on how to have back andd forth interviews with professionals. Geoff Keighley was a real dick when dealing with him too. Major Nelson wasn't anywhere as bad as Geoff. He's independent and actually gets hundreds of thousands of views. Even gametrailers gets less views than him most of the time. Some respect needs to be given. Its almost like you have to be affiliated with an IGN or a Gametrailers to get some respect.

I don't see why people harp on Major Nelson for his DRM "switch" response to Angry Joe. He is a PR person. He is supposed to stick to the corporate line. It's no different than this gen when Sony was going on and on about how rumble wasn't possible in the PS3 controller, and was a "last gen technology" and then BAM they settle with Immersion and suddenly rumble is back.

And Angry Joe is a terrible interviewer. He constantly interrupts the people he interviews, asks terrible questions (things there is no way people will answer honestly/fully, and he gets pissy when he doesn't get the answer he wants) among other things that make the interviews just uncomfortable to watch. I am not surprised people shit on him at E3 in interviews and were "dicks" to him. He should stick to screaming into his camera in Youtube videos.

All the flaws you list about Angry Joe make even more a sorry figure being proven wrong by him.
