hem around with some legs? I don't see an existing one or one that could be made in order to do that.

Going from 500k -> 1.5 million is not a small improvement.

Yes, RRoD played a lot in giving the 360 a very negative preception in Japan. As far as style of game, they have to find their own evergreen to really push sales because it'll be almost impossible to solely use a few JRPGs to keep a higher sustained level of sales.

You can't say they didn't try with that evergreen... they nabbed a MonHun MMO. Still, didn't help. It's not THEIR own exactly, but it's still a nice choice of game. Otherwise - if they didn't figure it out so far, then perhaps they just don't have any ideas aside from making some 2nd party JRPG's and buying 3rd party exclusivity.

Considering the amount of effort they presented Japan with during the first few years, a million more is still nothing. After all - they didn't try with the XB at all. And it got them nowhere in the end, anyway.

Whaaaaaa. A MonHun MMO was never going to sell in big numbers (and it still cracked 100k which is good). That's not an evergreen at all. If they released a new, proper MonHun, it would have done super well (MonHun will sell on any platform as evident by the awful MMO still selling) on any platform.

It's not really about one million more, but tripling their userbase despite only caring about the region for the first 30-40% of its life there. There's a glass half full/half empty argument here.

Maybe... you have something there. It was a huge boon for the PSP, after all. But alas, Ninty cockblocked that for everyone (I don't like MonHun, so I don't care ).

But we see it differently, that is true.

Release offline Dragon Quest XI exclusive and it will be a success.

I honestly don't know what MS could do to get a decent standing in Japan. Not claim it, but just get an "OK" position at least.

The 360 is not doing too hot in terms of JRPGs nowadays and the PS3 has become the primary console JRPG machine, but there was once a time when the 360 was the place to be to play JRPGs. I loved the exclusives, timed or not, they had like Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Magna Carta 2, Lost Oddysey, Infinite Undiscovery and quite a few more.

Yet even then they flunked. So I have no idea what they could do after that to be honest. Good luck.

Promo their Azure-tan worldwide

HAHA that's freaking awesome lol. I bet there are guys out there thinking "Azure-tan Kakkoii!"

She does have the cool vibe to her. Maybe she is indeed Microsoft's key to conquering Japan. I mean just look at Hatsune Miku. There was even a guy who said they would buy an Xbox One if Idolmaster came out on it. So yeah, make Azure a new computer generated idol. That's the recipe to success.

It did. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, and Star Ocean 4 all pushed a lot of HW for the 360 (especially considering how unfeasible it was to imagine the 360 selling 20k+!).

Once MS stopped paying for those timed exclusives, the 360 stopped have any meaningful boosts.

Thing is..

Exclusive out, boost, dead

Exclusive out, boost, dead

No significant permanent increase, no point in throwing money at it.

Because they only had 4 exclusives over a span of 2.5 years. You need far more than that, especially when every title is a JRPG which means the success will not be sustained. They needed to get a series that would have sustained success and good legs to not repeat that dead cycle.

I still don't think you can see the progress 360 made over Xbox and call it a waste.

I do. It was irrelevant, and it remained irrelevant, with the added bonus of being a money pit.

For starters, they needed no RROD. That was a big factor in why people didn't want it. What series/game style do you suggest could turn them around with some legs? I don't see an existing one or one that could be made in order to do that.

I think RROD was the main reason that the PS3 was able to make a comeback at all. That said, in Japan both the PS1 and PS2 had terrible failure rates. While the PS1 had issues outside of Japan, the western PS1 was Sony's third revision of the console. Initial two versions of the Japanese PS1 had even worse overheating and DRE issues than the western launch consoles. The PS2's failure rates were so bad, Sony settled a class action lawsuit and offered free repairs. Yet that didn't stop both the PS1 and PS2 from dominating in Japan.

I am surprised they haven't given up yet.

A lot of people forget just how poorly the Xbox 360 launched in Japan.

The Xbox was a complete failure in Japan, and for a good reason. So, when Microsoft launched the 360 in 2005 it needed to fit the Japanese tastes because the Xbox refused to.

Microsoft, instead, tried to make the Japanese change their taste! Look at the Japanese launch titles for the 360: Every Party, FIFA 06, Need for Speed: MW, PDZ, Ridge Raaaaaaccceer 6, and Tetris: Grand Master Ace

Unbelievable weak lineup. That was an insult to Japan - the 360, which NEEDED to appeal to the Japanese right away to make up for the Xbox, was even worse than the Xbox (which at least launched with Dead Or Alive 3, DOA4 wouldn't come out for another month after the launch of the 360).

What MS should have done is either delay the console so it could launch with Blue Dragon, Final Fantasy XI, Enchanted Arms, Dead or ALive 4, and Eternal Sonata. MS should have also commissioned more games for launch, like a Mahjong game. If this would have happened, the 360 would've started off a lot better in Japan, and then games like Star Ocean, Lost Odyssey, and Tales of Vesperia keep up the momentum.

Basically, it needed a strong launch, then every month or so needed a hit game to keep the momentum going. The 360 could've probably sold around 7 million in Japan if Microsoft wasn't so stubborn.

Nothing could stop the PS1 or Ps2 from dominating Japan. The game library for both of the consoles was so fantastic and had such an enormous amount of exclusives, there was no other platform to  buy. If Nintendo didn't screw up the N64 and Gamecube, I don't think they would have dominated in such a way.
