If 1 game on Wii sells almost 80% of 1 game on the HD twins COMBINED, then how can you call Nintendo's marketing a flaw. I didn't see Sony market Ni No Kuni despite the excellent sales, but there are also other games that don't sell despite the marketing, but Sony doesn't get blamed for that (Sly4).  This proves a non-Nintendo published third party game can sell on Nintendo consoles.

Certain games actually DO sell pretty good on Nintendo consoles like JRPG's (Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts). It has to be something that appeals to Nintendo gamers. Games like Skyrim/Wolvenstein and other boring shooters don't appeal to Nintendo gamers at all, it has to be unique. So don't rage again when Watch Dogs won't sell, this is already known.

- Skyrim is a boring shooter?  You mean I've sunk 150+ hours into the game and I was playing it wrong the whole time?!?

- Yeah, Nintendo gamers really love them some unique games... if by "unique" you mean anything with Mario, Zelda, Pokemon or Wii slapped on the title.

- Watch Dogs is also not a "boring shooter", in fact it is quite a unique game that just happens to feature shooting elements in it. On PS360 alone it will outsell the LTD sales of the Wii U's top games by the end of this year (NSMBU and Nintendo Land, which are the only two Wii U games to break a million thus far).  But because it's not a minigame-fest nor does it feature Nintendo's top mascots, the Wii U version will bomb hard.

Both of the bold statements reflect the thin ice both of you are standing on right now.

Me?  Seriously?!?

"if by "unique" you mean anything with Mario, Zelda, Pokemon or Wii slapped on the title."

Mario Galaxy, Wii_, Skyward Sword extremely unique content hardly seen before anywhere else

"in fact it is quite a unique game that just happens to feature shooting elements in it."

perhaps maybe just maybe, because the target audience is so wretched that they can't understand anything without blood and gunz, so in order to sell they are forced to put blood and gunz in almost everything.

I'll give you Galaxy and especially Wii Sports which is arguably the most original and unique title of last gen and pretty much the reason the Wii sold so well, but beyond that Zelda and most other games were the old formulas with motion controls tacked on.

And I think that's a bit too much generalizing by saying PS360 gamers don't understand anything without blood and guns... we're just a lot less squeamish about it, and we prefer games with a bit more variety and deeper plots than just "save the princess" all the time.

Nintendo always markets their games as they are releasing. I would not expect anyhing tilll launch week.

This is platinum games and they always bomb. The most mainstream thing they have ever done is MGR. I see Nintendo only marketing this game at consumers who already own Wii U. This game is not wide range market material.

I've seen this said twice in this thread and not a single person addressed it.  I will take this one as the only truth in the thread until someone tries to actually debunk it because I'm tired of reading actual likely arguments and no one even tries.

Because Xenoblade, Pikmin, Sin and Punishment, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Punch-Out, Monster Hunter, Kirby, Fatal Frame and others are all about  " saving the princess"

Bestselling games on "HD"Twins (the word HD is joke most of their games were hardly in HD), almost everything are either gimmick dependent or contain blood and or gunz

Ditto for the top selling Wii games having "Mario" or "Wii" in the title.

And actually the best selling 360 game of all time is Kinect Adventures... which also goes to show that the casual audience (which makes up about 95% of the Wii's userbase) will buy any game that's bundled with a plastic peripheral.

of course and yet they're highly unique games, with great sales,

your numbers are worthless, and even if they're true what wrong with casual market, is far more healthy to play few hours every week than some 16-35 old male drowned hours upon hours every day in blood and shooting everything on sight

still to early for advertisement though some magazine coverage would have been good

So... Nintendo fucked up again. Kamiya tweeted a while ago about how there  isn't any marketing for  The Wonderful 101. He is saying how stores aren't marketing it because they don't understand what it is.

You are controlling  a bunch of heroes and you can transform into different things. Yeah. Very hard to understand. Anyway, he is also saying how there are no previews in magazines and such. He compares it to Okami by saying how nobody understands it. Sigh...

Actually, I was in a Gamestop on Tuesday, and on their tv monitor over the checkout counter there was a decent preview/promo for The Wonderful 101 that described/showed enough of the game that I would be interrested in picking it up even if I hadn't already heard of the game.  I'm not defending Nintendo's lack of marketing.  Just mentioning that there are in fact stores that are promoting it, in my area anyway.

Question for developers, I know they don't post on VGChartz but hey, whatever. So, if you had a huge war with soldiers and swords, shields, etc. (IF YOU WERE A GOOD COMMANDER!)would you send peasants out to the front line first or your strongest soldiers? I would send my strongest soldiers so my weak ones wouldn't get battered.

This same principle applies to this situation as well. Nintendo should have warned developers, actually developers should have known that Nintendo consoles don't sell without Nintendo software. They should wait and send out their strong soldiers, 3D Mario, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. which will all be out by next year and then 3rd parties will have a better chance at success and profit because of the increased install base that the games I mentioned above will create.
