This poor sales of the WiiU is what would of happened to the Wii if it's gimmick hadn't taken off with the casuals, the fact that it did and did so despite it's hardware specs unfortunately led Nintendo to chase the golden goose again and this went in to the decisions that lead to the WiiU's underpowered hardware and gimmick controller...except this time round the gimmick didn't take off and now the WiiU is left in a bad position with both hardware and 3rd party software.
So is the WiiU a nex-gen console?, yes it is clearly an 8th generation machine, and yes the WiiU is definitely a more power console than the Wii, however, when you zoom out and look at what's on the market the WiiU doesn't fair so well, it's specs are just shy over the PS3/360 if not only for it's new GPU architeture but also double the ram, but falls significantly short of bridging any gap between it's self and the PS4/Xbox one. This difference and the simple fact that neither Nintendo games or 3rd party have been able to distinctively show the difference leads to gamers labeling it a last gent console.
As for the gap, it's significance can not be ignored, and just like the hardware gap of the Wii, the WiiU will again miss out on most newer next-gen games. I know most will disregard and state something on the lines of diminishing returns, but lets face reality, both the XBOX one and PS4 at a base minimum will use 5GB of ram for games while the WiiU only has 1GB available, then lets not forget that both the PS4 and Xbox one have more capable GPU's ranging between from 1.2 - 1.8TF and running on the more efficient architecture versus the WiiU GPU estimated at 176-352GF running on less efficient architecture. With just these two aspects alone developers may face the problem that trying to port the game down may be TOO much work for too little sales, in fact we may see games which are different to the main PS4/Xbox one game being made on the WiIU, again just like the Wii situation.
Other then the underpowered specs of the WiiU when compared to the PS4/Xbox one, Nintendo hasn't capabilitiesed on their 1 year lead, in fact Nintnedo seems lost with the WiiU, on one hand you can do the dual screen games like ZombieU and asynchronous gameplay, but on the other hand you can do off screen play....the problem is... these two features fundamental conflict with each other and you can only do one. They're both cool but one offers unique gameplay while the other offers the ability to play their game either on the big screen or on the tablet if the big TV is being used.
So it comes down to, do you want the unique dual screen set up for games, or do you want off screen gaming?
Nintendo hasn't decided and now they struggle to advertise exactly what the WiiU IS and what exactly it OFFERS when compared to the competition,Nintendo now have to clearly inform consumers that not ALL games can be played off screen using the tablet, as well as informing consumers which games offer the dual screen uniqueness....frankly it's a mess for marketing.
The WiiU boils down to a machine for the Nintendo hardcore, it won't be the first console of choice for the mass of core gamers, rather it will be relegated to the secondary console if that.
All I can say is, Iwata better work hard on changing the WiiU's situation cuz competition is good, otherwise, he may be forced to resign by the board....investors don't like when the company is run by an incompetent fools, or simply ones that keeps making the wrong calls.
anyways, just my 2 cents.
