It's a next-gen console in terms of time, but the fact that you even need to post this suggests that Nintendo have failed to explain why it's a next-gen console in other respects.
I'm not talking solely in terms of power, if Nintendo really wanted to go that route they're going to get trounced by PS4 and X1. The controller/tablet is what they needed to demonstrate and push as a next gen feature, but so far they've failed to demonstrate any significant advantages of the tablet controller in games. Nintendo fans will buy it for Nintendo games but the wider consumer hasn't been convinced yet.
