Forums - Sony - How big can PS4 be in Japan?

I'm not quite sure if you understood what I said.

I said Wii caused an abnormal growth in total amount of consoles sold. But in Japan, console sales shrunk compared to last gen even with the Wii. If the Wii hadn't existed, the total number of consoles sold in Japan would be even less than what we see now and it has already shrunken from the 6th gen.

That coupled with a massive shift in major Japanese franchises toward handhelds last gen (DQ, AC, etc.) that's continuing throughout the 8th gen (SMT and a couple more that I'm forgetting) means that there's less incentive to buy a console in Japan.

Those are huge assumptions you make concerning the existence of the Wii on the Japanese market. Anyway, If the Wii didn't exist at all then only 155mil consoles would be sold this gen Ps3+360...  145 outside of Japan. Others have grown not because of 360, ps3, or gaming in general becoming more popular but because the amount of markets the systems are offered has grown.

So you're saying that the Wii didn't make the console market seem artificially larger in Japan and that the shrinking of the console market is attributed directly to the failures of the PS3?

I'm saying if the Wii made the console market artificially larger in Japan then that applies to the gaming industry as a whole.

I could see it being somewhat bigger than PS3 if everything goes well. 12m or so perhaps. But I don't think much of the Wii's audience is going to PS4.

Which it did? 7th gen console total sales are bigger than the 6th gen.

You can say that the "rest of the world" came into play here, but in the major territories, growth was caused the Wii. And yet in Japan, console sales shrunk. What is the reason for this shrinking when in the rest of the world, the Wii caused a growth?

In japan announcements don't sell consoles.

I'll go with a 50-50 split between wii u and ps4.

I think xbone won't even be sold there.

PS4 11 million max

Sounds reasonable. I think the Wii U is less interesting than the Wii was for Japanese gamers. Given that, there will be less competition for the PS4 than the last generation and the PS4 will also be more affordable. Still, it's not a huge market over there. 20 million lifetime sales is really pushing the upward limits of the market.

PS4 already has Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts locked to establish itself decently there and now all it needs is Dragon Quest.

Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear Solid, Yakuza, Resident Evil and Gran Turismo are some others that the PS4 library would need

We already have the $399 price point that was needed to do smoothley.

Also, the PS1 and PS2 both launched at $299 so it would be hard for PS4 to match them

hopefully it would be the same in the NA release... which is about the size of ps3 slim
