Rubbish. The most recent gen still sold over 20+ million hardware units in Japan. 

 

No change from the early NES and SNES days. 

That's with the Wiiflation, and we didn't see a significant growth in consoles bought in Japan like in the rest of the world. Wii made it look like it was doing fine when it was already on decline.

Sony is willing to launch late in Japan. That's how much it shrunk.

DQ, MH, Pokemon and all the big franchises are on 3DS. PS4 will likely be more of Western console than a Japanese one. I say WiiU+PS4 don't reach 15 mil combined. Japan's lifestyle is more suited to handhelds. Consoles are a dying breed.

Otakus must be sick of playing with the wiimote, plus tablets market is kinda weak in japan, so wii U's gamepad is less important there then here, I think.

But still, software wise, Sony still have a lot to do for japan : One RPG only, no VN announced yet, no monster hunter like, FFXIV is on pc and PS3 too, DQX is on Wii U ...

Wow. Did you read the OP or do you just repeat what others say? Sure there has been a decline since the PS2 days, but theres still a ton of sales to be had in Japan. 

 

Aproximately 20 million. This hasnt changed since the 80's when NES came out.

I'm not quite sure if you understood what I said.

I said Wii caused an abnormal growth in total amount of consoles sold. But in Japan, console sales shrunk compared to last gen even with the Wii. If the Wii hadn't existed, the total number of consoles sold in Japan would be even less than what we see now and it has already shrunken from the 6th gen.

That coupled with a massive shift in major Japanese franchises toward handhelds last gen (DQ, AC, etc.) that's continuing throughout the 8th gen (SMT and a couple more that I'm forgetting) means that there's less incentive to buy a console in Japan.

Exactly. 

People are also leaving out the fact that PS3 was super expensive in Japan. PS4 will be a lot cheaper

So in Japan Sony has gone

Playstation 1 - 19.3 million
Playstation 2 - 23.1 million
Playstation 3 - 9.3 million

I think 9 million is the floor and 19 million is the ceiling for them. I'd say 14 million could be done as expect X1 to do about 1 million and Wii U about 6 million there. Total of ~21 million consoles sold.
