Rubbish. The most recent gen still sold over 20+ million hardware units in Japan. 

 

No change from the early NES and SNES days. 

That's with the Wiiflation, and we didn't see a significant growth in consoles bought in Japan like in the rest of the world. Wii made it look like it was doing fine when it was already on decline.

Sony is willing to launch late in Japan. That's how much it shrunk.
